Guided Tours

Pros:

  • "The falconry display was exceptional. The guy doing it was very entertaining 😂 The kids and adults really enjoyed, audience participation was popular."
  • "Absolutely jam-packed with history. The guided tour was a definite must and the guide was absolutely terrific - knowledgeable and really enthusiastic."
  • "Free guide tour was very interesting also."
  • "We had the wonderful Isla, whose knowledge, enthusiasm and clear voice kept us spellbound for an hour and a half."
  • "The tour, which heads out from near the main entrance tower was led by Gareth, who showed a lot of passion for the subject, and loads of interesting background stories."
  • "Gareth the tour guide (the old headmaster of the local school) is absolutely fantastic, funny and full of amazing facts."
  • "Our guide David was obviously very knowledgeable and highly engaging - his enthusiasm was contagious."

Cons:

  • "Sadly we struggled to stretch our stay out beyond 90 minutes as there wasn't much to do."
  • "Many other rooms were unfortunately empty."
  • "Just a shame the ticket lady didn't know what was going on in the castle that day or forgot to mention the theatre company running Knight school for the kids."
  • "Unfortunately the guided tours had stopped when we went (20th Oct) but you can listen to audios dotted around the castle."
  • "A bit of a disappointment as a day out, but a splendid building all the same."
  • "Could do with some more historical info or interactive things there but I assume that's also due to covid."
  • "Visited on a Saturday afternoon, was pretty empty so could explore at our leisure. The various rooms and information boards were quite hard to follow though, seemed to be skipping backwards and forwards through different centuries."

Value for Money

Pros:

  • "It's not Cadw 😁 but it's a historic castle with lots of bits to visit and lots of stairs - entry was reasonably priced."
  • "We parked in the parade car park, which is just £3 for the whole day, a lot cheaper than the Castle car park."
  • "The day itself was ridiculously cheap (£9 each adult, £9.90 with gift aid)."
  • "Totally worth £9.90 (£9 without aid)."
  • "The entrance fee for the castle was such good value considering how much there was to explore and how well presented it was."
  • "Great entrance fee value and a few internal rooms with displays but an awful lot of it is outdoors and exposed."
  • "Admission fees are reasonable."

Cons:

  • "Entry was nearly £10 each, & a discount for oap's."
  • "The place is fantastic, I would say that the entrance is a bit expensive for what you get."
  • "The cafe is expensive and the usual fare."
  • "Lovely area and the castle is absolutely beautiful, we were going to go inside but found out the cost and it was absolutely ridiculous!"
  • "You have to pay for parking pay and display run by the council."
  • "Good grief, I was convinced that I had hypothermia by the end of my visit."
  • "Lovely castle, I would like it better if there weren't tents/ metal barriers/stuff all over the place in the courtyard which basically spoils most photos you might want to take with the courtyard in it."

Facilities & Amenities

Pros:

  • "There is ample parking in the vicinity and also very reasonably priced."
  • "Toilets were very clean, staff were helpful."
  • "There are also a restaurant and cafe on site if you wanted refreshments."
  • "Sheltered and outside seating is available."
  • "Cafe on site, as well as a stall in the middle selling drinks and ice cream - reasonably priced."
  • "There are toilets, a cafe and gift shop on site. On certain days they have activities on, but you need to check for them."
  • "They have a cafe, toilets and have an ice cream stall. Plenty of benches to sit down."

Cons:

  • "Don't have the waffle cones with ice creams from there. They are stale and we just had to throw them away. Just get a tub for it."
  • "The cafe was closed to allow for a one way system for the toilets but they had a pop up cafe."
  • "Some of the displays look a little tired and could do with some updating, especially the QR codes around the site that provide information on the castle."
  • "There is no disabled access for wheel chairs to upper levels no lifts as to be expected I suppose but something to note if you require this."
  • "Alot of the parts to the castle are quite tricky to navigate with young children and prams can only access the lower levels."
  • "The facilities were excellent."
  • "They do not provide on site parking but there are many car parks which are only a short walk away and quite cheap too."
