Castle and Grounds

Pros:

  • "What a fantastic castle and place to visit with the family (and dog!). The castle is immaculate on the outside with lovely manicured lawns and gardens."
  • "A beautifully restored exterior and contained interior after a fire in 1929."
  • "One can definitely feel the royal life what kings use to live with more than 500 acres of land... Beautiful location..."
  • "Imposing, well looked after structure and gardens."
  • "Walking around the grounds of the castle is also great."
  • "The Castle along with the nearby Church and Chapel is very much about the history of the buildings rather than the usual trappings like paintings and furniture but still very informative."
  • "The grounds are vast with both a Catholic and Protestant church within them."

Cons:

  • "The Castle is beautiful but unfortunately it is not wheel chair friendly."
  • "If you are selling maps for a circular walk then you need to address the mud issues with a bridge or stepping stones."
  • "Some of them lead you along paths which have not been maintained, very overgrown."
  • "The paths up to the Castle are made of lose stones, and to enter the Castle you have to go down steps."
  • "Once in the Castle there is a winding metal staircase to get to the next floor, also not disabled friendly."
  • "It's sad that the inside of the castle was destroyed by fire and there are now only two floors."
  • "Nice looking building but a fire in 1930 gutted it. It has been made safe and there are some displays about how it used to look but don't expect the stately home experience."

Family and Children Activities

Pros:

  • "They have a very interesting game for the kids to play while going around the castle."
  • "Really enjoyed our trip, came with our 2 daughters aged 3 and 6. They loved searching for the bat's and squirrels."
  • "We were delighted that the children's play area in the woodland was open and not at all busy during our visit."
  • "The children loved the games on the lawn."
  • "There was also a lovely new playground, peacocks and a cafe and a maze cut into the grass."
  • "They have good kid activity kits too. Great day out."
  • "Went here for both Easter and Halloween with our 2-3 year old. We all really enjoyed ourselves."

Cons:

  • "We arrived during the Spooky Fun event, and were told we had to attend the event, and could not enter with our English Heritage card."
  • "Not impressed with this place. Was looking for somewhere to eat and Lulworth castle advertise that they have a cafe, upon arrival we paid £3 car park then made our way to the castle which is a little walk on a stone path which isn't good for a push chair."
  • "Nothing for halloween a massive disappointment for the kids."
  • "Disappointed. Our kids grew up here. Spent many happy hours exploring the castle and grounds. It was all closed off due to Camp Bestival."
  • "We are concerned about the conditions that the peacocks were being kept in."
  • "Cant give a review of this as when we got there it was closed. As there was something going on all week. And they couldn't be bothered to update their website."
  • "Just wish the peacocks were about but apparently they had been too naughty."

  • "Free entry for English Heritage members."
  • "Very good value for money, children and dogs welcome, something for everyone."
  • "Very reasonably priced compared to others."

  • "Best of all is the value for money, £3 parking and you can spend the day."
  • "The £6 entry for the castle is a very reasonable price."
  • "Thought the entry price was reasonable at £7 per adult and parking was cheap at £3."
