Accessibility & Climbing

Pros:

  • "Climbing to the top is not too difficult. There are a few peaks to try and my child thought they were so interesting."
  • "Great views and only a short walk if you want."
  • "Beautiful views. Not too steep as a gradual gradient to the top, lots of pathways leading in and around to extend your hike."
  • "Great fun for adventures with the family..it snowed so was too cold for bouldering but we gave it a go and then went for a hike around."
  • "The rocks are great for climbing and the grounds soft, so taking a tumble isn't too bad."
  • "The climbing is good, nice easy grades to start the kids on, belaying is easy and the rock is clean with little to no small debris at height."
  • "Both rocks fairly easy to get up and down from with a rough staircase carved into the stepper one."

Cons:

  • "Impressive but often overcrowded Tor. The quarry is a beautiful spot but we were underwhelmed by the tor itself."
  • "It can be hard to get up on the top of the rock if there is high winds."
  • "The climb to the top of Haytor Rocks will not be accessible to all. It's quite steep and there are some deep and relatively wide cracks to get over."
  • "Could be too steep if you have mobility problems."
  • "You can climb on the rocks but a little slippery."
  • "The high winds make it pretty dangerous."
  • "No amenities but there was an ice-cream van from around 10am until 4pm carpark can get very busy and as you can see by some of the photos no matter where you go there's always so scumbags that don't dispose of their rubbish or dog waste."

Parking & Facilities

Pros:

  • "The car park to access the tor is a good size with restrooms and an electric car charging point."
  • "Parking: Very easy parking that is only a short walk down the hill from haytor rocks."
  • "Facilities and national park visitor centre down the road."
  • "A number of car parks nearby and being on the edge of the moor make this one of the more popular places to visit."
  • "There's an information centre, loos and a catering van in the bottom car park."
  • "Lots of nearby parking, some paid, some free."
  • "Small parking area with toilet facilities and visitor centre including shop."

Cons:

  • "Too busy on a warm Saturday afternoon though."
  • "I think it is disgusting that they have put large stones in front of the free car park making you have to park in a pay a display car park."
  • "Parking was quite pricey at £3 for 3hrs when we only really needed 30mins."
  • "Less parking space for the number of people come to the spot."
  • "Beware the car parks have recently become pay and display. Cash only payment."
  • "Unfortunately the local council wish to squeeze every last penny out of hard working families by the introduction of parking metres."
  • "The closest carpark is a pay and display, however you can park for free in the Saddle Tor North Carpark further along."

Weather & Environment

Pros:

  • "Weather can change very quickly so be prepared."
  • "An ice cream van was conveniently at the top."
  • "The quarry has a pond in the middle and paths going around the outside with a lot of wildlife, which all adds up to a nice scenery to have a picnic or walk."
  • "Amazing view all the way around. Lovely place to sit and watch the sun go down."
  • "Spectacular views over Dartmoor, and on a clear day see all the way to the sea."
  • "Can’t ever get tired of the views from the top of the rocks."
  • "Absolutely stunning Tor. A bit of a walk to get to buy well worth the views from the top."

Cons:

  • "My only grudge with this place is that the more beautiful it got, the windier it got."
  • "Bring a jersey, it’s windy on less sunny days."
  • "It's not so good on a dull day or showery weather with limited visibility."
  • "Don't go when it is windy (any wind is magnified at the top) and not when it is wet."
  • "It can get a bit crowded at the top, however, the 360° uninterrupted views of the landscape are well worth it on a clear day, although it can get blustery without warning."
  • "The rocks did have some red ants, so a blanket would be beneficial."
  • "It was very windy when we visited there."
