Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food is exceptional and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and cannot do enough to make sure your visit is as comfortable as possible."
  • "The steak was cooked as we ordered, and my husband enjoyed his drinks."
  • "Without a doubt the best steak, if not the best meal, I have ever had."
  • "Delicious, well cooked steak in a laid back environment."
  • "Food was amazing as usual, had my first steak tartare as a starter and was one of the tastier things I have ever had."
  • "Food was excellent, steak cooked beautifully."
  • "The food was amazing, we had the Sunday roast option and couldn't fault it."

Cons:

  • "This is not a good restaurant for vegetarians; or anyone who doesn't want steak."
  • "Steaks were bang average and have had a lot better."
  • "The black mash we returned as it was revolting."
  • "Sadly the steak had a more than usual amount of fat for a fillet and was extremely tough making it very difficult to cut."
  • "The mac and cheese was nothing special and the broccoli was underdone."
  • "It was very bland and my the chips in beef dripping very disappointing."
  • "The food didn't quite live up to expectations."

Service

Pros:

  • "The waitstaff were so pleasant, and they took the time to make little gestures like complimentary glasses of Prosecco before dinner and a 'Congratulations on your honeymoon' display with our dessert."
  • "Service was great, no long waits between courses and all set in relaxed and comfortable environment."
  • "Couldn't fault the service, which was warm, friendly and welcoming."
  • "The service from staff, Dan and Sylvia was outstanding, very attentive and just all round attitude to us was brilliant."
  • "Absolutely outstanding. Visited on the 2/1/23 for my wife's birthday."
  • "The staff were very friendly and helpful."
  • "The staff went way beyond with their kindness compared to any other restaurant we have been to."

Cons:

  • "We were also constantly forgotten about and eventually had to get up and ask for the bill at the bar after waiting so long when there were only two other tables!!"
  • "We were then served by two different waiting staff, both of whom seemed in a hurry to get our order, the distinct impression being that table turnaround time was their priority."
  • "We were disappointed to only be served half pints due to the restaurant not offering pint sizes of the draft."
  • "We were crammed into a tiny table even though I had requested a booth."
  • "We took friends here and were embarrassed by the service and cost."
  • "Staff treated us as garbage since we entered."
  • "Unfortunately the vegetables and Yorkshire pudding were cold."

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "Clean, warm and friendly atmosphere with all covid measures in place."
  • "Lovely cozy atmosphere and friendly attentive staff."
  • "Great staff, amazing food and lovely ambience."
  • "Great atmosphere and great food."
  • "The restaurant has a really good atmosphere, we didn't want to leave!"
  • "Porter & Rye itself is contemporary and cool - a relaxed 'New York' inspired setting that doesn't feel too try-hard."
  • "This was a lovely little place, quite cosy and just the right amount of attention from the staff."

Cons:

  • "I found the atmosphere very lacking (it was quiet)."
  • "Pretty cramped. Our table was directly outside a disabled toilet, no way in hell anybody in a wheelchair could have accessed the loo without our whole table being uprooted."
  • "Quite a small cramped venue not ideal, so you are better off at The Butchers shop along the road."
  • "I also found the booth-style tables just too small."
  • "There was an intimate atmosphere as it is a smaller establishment."
  • "We were then shown to a table at the rear of the restaurant, next to the toilet and positioned so that the person sitting on the banquette was on an uneven join between two cushion sections."
  • "The steaks themselves were mediocre at best."

Value for Money

Pros:

  • "Once was a great steak restaurant offering value for money."

  • "A bit pricey but totally worth it: will be coming back for sure."

Cons:

  • "The bill came to £130 which I felt was extortionate for what we actually got."
  • "Sadly, now over priced, sides no longer included or sauces with main."
  • "For the price the dishes are, the food is below average in our opinion."
  • "Both the steaks were actually a bit of a letdown. There are better steak restaurants out there for this price range."
  • "Loads of places in Glasgow offer a Chateaubriand of similar quality at a far better price."
  • "Nice enjoyable meal but well overpriced."
  • "All in all an expensive way to enjoy yourself as much as you could at a cheaper restaurant with better food and more selection. Really really not recommendable."
