Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The tofu was incredible and the dish I'd have to order every time I go."
  • "The food is completely incredible."
  • "The best dish for me is the prawn bao."
  • "Very good overall. Great tasting bao’s."
  • "The food was great and the cocktails and sake were delicious - all really good value."
  • "The food was simply mouth watering. The buns are steamed to perfection and the pork belly bao was simply the best."
  • "Absolutely incredible food, a real flavour explosion!"

Cons:

  • "Food portions: Very small (we are not big eaters)."
  • "The chicken in the Bao was very very dry."
  • "The food was very tasty but pretty standard nothing extraordinary in terms of flavours."
  • "Most dishes were served with a blanket of soy sauce which overpowered any other flavours."
  • "The chicken and beef baos were both very average - the meat was dry, and the sauces quite bland."
  • "Chicken was soggy and flavourless - although the mayo was delicious. The bao were stodgy and lacked flavour too."
  • "Beef tasted like toothpaste which was weird. Kimchi was flavourless. Chicken was greasy/undercooked. Chips were soooo oily."

Service

Pros:

  • "Staff great; friendly helpful and fun."
  • "The service was impeccable, especially as we had Mya who was so attentive, chatty and made us feel so welcome."
  • "Fantastic and attentive service that went above and beyond for our party - faultless."
  • "Customer service was tip top, TJ was a superstar and a genuine asset to this establishment."
  • "Service and atmosphere were incredible."
  • "Staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, as well as quick service."
  • "The staff are attentive and personable; they always make u feel like a true guest of the establishment!"

Cons:

  • "Slow service, less than mediocre western adaptations of Chinese ‘snacks’ that are small in portions and big on price."
  • "Service here was also quite slow and forgot our order."
  • "Service was slow, we have waited a long time for both our starter and the baos."
  • "Our drink ordered from the bar never turned up but we were easily distracted by the fast service- Food arrived within 10 minutes."
  • "However, on arrival receptionist looked upset of that fact we bothered to walk in and disturb the chat she had with another team member."
  • "We feel service could be better and more attendant, given it was a relatively quiet and relaxed evening."
  • "Overall we felt like a bit of an inconvenience and didn't like the hospitality we recived."

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "Mr Bao is a really lovely non-pretentious restaurant and a well treasured place in Peckham. It's an impressive place to take people who don't know the area, reasonably priced, and every single one of the dishes is a taste sensation."
  • "Friendly staff and relaxed feel."
  • "It’s a sin that I hadn’t been here before last night. It is such a vibe and the food is ridiculously good."
  • "The atmosphere was lovely, not pretentious in the slightest and the staff were so friendly and helpful."
  • "Lovely atmosphere in a well decorated place."
  • "The vibe in the restaurant is cool. We had a great evening."
  • "The space and atmosphere is really nice."

Cons:

  • "Started with a bang, ended with a fizzle. Not suitable for vegetarians, especially if there are further restrictions such as mushroom or gluten allergies."
  • "Not loads of space but each of the three times I've been I've had an incredible meal."
  • "I though the music volume was pretty ‘pre-covid’ as it was loud and you did have to raise your voice to have a conversation."
  • "Sat on a table where the sun was against my face and the door kept banging all the time-really need to fix that door!"
  • "No social distancing possible, people waiting over 45 mins for a delivery."
  • "Filled with hipsters who value style over substance I’d say….the venue looks fashionable enough though 😒"
  • "No calling out of orders so 15-20 people huddling round a tiny door."

Value

Pros:

  • "Only hangup is the price but worth it for the experience."
  • "Also came in at under £40 for 2 people inc drinks which is mad value in today’s out of control London food scene."
  • "Delicious bao buns for an affordable price too."
  • "We were very happy with the service and the food and thought it was VERY worth the money and not overpriced at all."
  • "Also quite reasonably priced and the place has a nice atmosphere."
  • "Such a good price too - £50 for two which included 2 cocktails, 4 bao buns and 3 sharing plates!"
  • "Very well priced too!"

Cons:

  • "Food portions: Very small (we are not big eaters)."
  • "And portions were diabolically small. 4 pieces of chicken for £7.50 was a rip off."
  • "Price: Very expensive."
  • "They are served and priced individually and are a bit pricey."
  • "I’m sorry but £4.50 for ten slices of cucumber??"
  • "Value for money is ok, but be aware that drinks are expensive."
  • "I ordered 2 of each of the veggie tofu and shitake mushroom baos for take out... but to spend that much and get something that barely filled me and my 12 year old son up is incredibly poor value, and felt quite frankly like a total rip off."
