Food Quality

Pros:

  • "Really tasty lamb special with some great hot sauce (which is also for sale)"
  • "Fantastic bacon cheese burger and the chips were really good."
  • "The Sunday roast is awesome. Very good portions, well cooked and really tasty"
  • "Food was delicious. Two of us are vegan and they have many vegan options"
  • "Very good family meal of Sunday roast and burgers. Everything was beautifully cooked."
  • "The food sets your taste buds on fire, the chefs are so creative bringing different flavours together that commands your attention."
  • "Good food here at reasonable prices."

Cons:

  • "£16 for the burger and chips they serve is crazy. The burger is small and no better than a burgar van burger, the chips are overcooked."
  • "Good pub, average food which was mostly all overcooked."
  • "Eventually, we received our meals, two of which were burnt and one of which was tasteless."
  • "Horrendous veggie burgers."
  • "Ordered Chef special for haddock and chips with peas. It cost me £15. Wasn't informed nor does the menu state that everything would be over cooked and covered in salt."
  • "The street mexican food they make is absolutely rank"
  • "Family friendly atmosphere, good selection of beers, however food was awful."

Service

Pros:

  • "Bar staff were extremely efficient and very friendly."
  • "Despite being masked up they were absolutely brilliant! Friendly and inviting."
  • "Service was quick and kind, especially considering how busy it was for Sunday lunch."
  • "The service here is off the scale, just fabulous."
  • "Excellent and speedy service from the friendly and helpful staff."
  • "Staff were very attentive and friendly. Really great value. Highly recommended"
  • "The staff at the Railway Inn are fantastic. They are super friendly and relaxed"

Cons:

  • "Poor service: saw others receive their food before us, turns out they lost our ticket, it happens, but no apology!"
  • "Did complain but was met with hardly any response."
  • "Expensive and slow service - it still took over 10 minutes to get served"
  • "Customer service has fallen off a cliff"
  • "Shocking service from a young bar person with attitude no charisma or even a thank you."
  • "However due to the measures in place to protect staff and customers on one occasion we waited just short of 30 minutes for the first drinks to arrive."
  • "The pressure of catering to less than well planned bookings led to an unacceptable waiting time and forgotten meals"

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "Great atmosphere. Fledgling comedy nights. Quiz night on a Monday"
  • "Great meeting place with a lively atmosphere."
  • "The atmosphere is outstanding."
  • "Nice atmosphere, great cider selection would recommend for a drink or two."
  • "Great atmosphere, very unique and cosy style to the building."
  • "The Railway Inn has a 'buzz' this place is so inviting - you don't want to leave."
  • "The Railway Inn offers a warm friendly welcome with a great atmosphere."

Cons:

  • "Pricey if you just want a couple of pints."
  • "This place does get crowded and quite loud."
  • "However, the noise was way too loud for the small environment that it is"
  • "Main issue is on Sundays. Very popular with families. Children running around inside and outside, parents don't seem to care but it changes the atmosphere considerably."
  • "Be aware they play the music really loud so I struggled to have a conversation."
  • "Only thing keeping it from 5 stars for me is the music. It was quite loud!"
  • "It's a bit of a creche so if you don't like kids and buggies avoid it."

Value

Pros:

  • "For the price about 13.95 was well worth its price tag & the 5 star rating, will definitely be going back."
  • "Only when we had started the lesson, did we see that if you are attending a class, mention pottery at bar and receive 15% off. You also receive a free drink from a selection list."
  • "Fast efficient service at the Bar and a surprising 2 for 1 Dinner offer on delicious hamburgers on Wednesdays."
  • "Really great value. Highly recommended"
  • "Fair price - and look out for the daily special offers."
  • "Plenty of choice with catering options and very affordable"
  • "Great family-friendly pub with a fantastic menu."

Cons:

  • "Very expensive for a Portslade pub. £17.50 for 2 pints of one particular IPA"
  • "Bearing in mind Foghorn down the road can do local brews for 50% less than this that doesn't excuse ridiculous amount charged"
  • "Make sure you go in happy hour otherwise your paying HUGE prices"
  • "Lovely pub! Drinks quite expensive but this pub has been through a recent makeover which has created a really good vibe."
  • "The only reason it lost a star was that I felt the beer was quite expensive."
  • "Excellent Sunday roast on Mother’s Day but ridiculously priced bottles of house wine starting at £29!"
  • "Sunday lunch, Had to wait for food as usual. Over an hour."

Facilities

Pros:

  • "There's a reasonably sized function room at the rear and a beer garden wrapping around the rear with faux a train carriage with 3 or 4 individual cabins to sit in, offering a decent level of privacy."
  • "Toilets clean and tidy. Looks to be a large smoking area out back"
  • "Parties catered for and when the good weather arrives, the outdoor space is safe and fun for the youngest kids."
  • "Good music and very family friendly, has a little play area at the back of the garden"
  • "They have a charming outdoor area with plenty of seating, where you can see trains passing by Portslade station."
  • "Nice outside area with plenty of seating. Really pleased they had patio heaters as it wasn't the nicest day."
  • "Nice beer garden which is kiddie friendly."

Cons:

  • "Seems a nice pub but obviously don't like people who read books!"
  • "At the time of my visit the garden was in need of a trim. Load of overhanging greenery, including brambles, (along the railway line wall) which made sitting back problematical"
  • "Wheelchair users may struggle a little. Could get in, enjoy but there are steps inside"
  • "Parking in the streets around is free - if you can find a gap, as there are shops nearby and lots of residential houses - so not always easy to find a gap - don't think they have a car park."
  • "The only downside is there is no parking, but the station car park is accessible for a small fee, and it is on numerous bus and train routes."
  • "Took a booking with a high chair for 7.30. We were told 8 children can't be in there."
  • "The fish was barely edible, the batter tasted like it had sat on the side for weeks."
