Historic Ambiance and Architecture
Pros:
"With the building dating from 1320, this haunted pub has to be included on a visit to Salisbury."
"A very old pub with character - with its dark wood and wonky infrastructure, it looks like something out of Tolkien."
"Amazing place, tipical English pub. It is the oldest pub in Salisbury, existing since XIVth century."
"This is a destination restaurant for anyone visiting Salisbury. The historical building itself is the real prize."
"Lovely old building very quirky."
"700 year old Inn. The restaurant was on the first floor. It was nice to be escorted upstairs rather than directed."
"Love this pub!! So full of character as you'd expect from a 700-year-old building!"
"The atmosphere in this pub is incredible. Very warm and homey, a place I would want to sit in for hours."
Cons:
"The staircase is steep and narrow. Kids and elders must be extra careful."
"Very cramped with hard to find seating."
"All the walls and floors are at an angle, which is great when you've had a few because then it all looks level:)"
"It is a bit snug which for some may be an issue but really brought people together."
"The two chairs at my table were shaky and I was worried that they may give way any time during the meal."
"The only downside was that the place was empty so no atmosphere."
"Great Pub but Give the food a miss. Lovely friendly quirky historic local which has been serving locals and visitors alike for centuries."
"Beautiful old and enclosed pub in Salisbury. Probably one of the oldest, still has its old rustic old fashioned decor."
Food Quality and Taste
Pros:
"The Sunday Roast is so good especially the carrots coming on the side."
"We came for lunch as a family of 4 with a booking having just visited Stonehenge, I had the trio of venison."
"We had the smoked salmon and glazed goats cheese for starters and the pork belly and venison fillet for mains, and seriously, the noises coming from our table were a bit obscene."
"Absolutely perfection from start to finish!"
"All I can say is Wow. What a place. Amazing building lay out. Really quirky. Food was superb."
"This was an exceptional lunch of Trio of Wild Venison."
"The food was really good and the decor is nice."
"Excellent food. Do NOT arrive unless very hungry, as the portions are large!"
Cons:
"The food was dry or overcooked and definitely not worth the price tag."
"The venison from the Trio dish was overcooked and too dry."
"Definitely overpriced. We tried the slow braised cheek and it was so terribly cooked."
"I had the venison burger and my friends had the venison sausages and the pork belly. I found the burger overcooked."
"My food was very tasty and hot. Unfortunately, 1 of our party was served cold steak."
"The dressing in my hamburger was fridge cold when served."
"The actual pub is a very atmospheric, old fashioned style pub, the drinks however are very overpriced, and not of good quality."
"The main dishes are good, though meat arrived more cooked than desired."
Service and Staff Attitude
Pros:
"Lived up to the hype. Very old original features, amazing staff, great service lovely food."
"Friendly staff and very popular."
"Staff were very friendly and attentive."
"Staff nice, but service slow as waitresses seemed to be run off their feet, and we were there early like 5:30pm."
"Amazing food and staff were very friendly and helpful."
"Wonderful food (various choices of starters, main courses and deserts, all pretty tasty and nicely plated), prompt and helpful table service and staff."
"Very nice staff and beer excellent."
"Love love this place. It's on the Salisbury historic trail. Lovely lunches here."
Cons:
"Some locals are accommodating and help you get a seat, other not so."
"Barman needs a bit more charisma as he is not very welcoming."
"May have just been an off day, but at £25 for a meal you'd expect better food. Lower the price by £8 OR get a better chef."
"Wait and bar staff could not have been more unprofessional, disinterested or poorly attired."
"Local to the area and love going here for drinks. Lovely, old, and fairly cheap...for drinks. When we went for lunch, however, it was quite poor."
"Unfortunately cannot give 5* as went in for lunch and chose 'Coronation Chicken' sandwich. What I got was Roast Chicken in garlic butter."
"Have been to this pub several times. However, getting served is a nightmare."
"Utterly abysmal. Walked into the most unwelcoming entrance, barman behind the bar, but no welcome."
