Interior and Architecture

Pros:

  • "You could go up to a higher floor inside the building and look down to see the intricate detail/stonework from above."
  • "You find yourself looking upwards to see the exquisite sculptured ceiling, and downwards to the colourful tiled floors."
  • "The cathedral itself is magnificent! We arrived late in the afternoon. So the lighting was beautiful."
  • "The cathedral is quite magnificent with loads of history. I highly recommend taking a tour with one of the guides."

Cons:

  • "The area around the church leaves a lot to be desired. So it's not some place I'd recommend to stay."
  • "The cathedral itself lacked warmth, no welcome from anyone, we stayed after the service and it was the same, no welcome."

Harry Potter and Doctor Who Filming Location

Pros:

  • "I was drawn here in January 2023, as it was a Harry Potter and Doctor Who filming location, and because I heard it had a beautiful interior, but the visit surpassed my expectations."
  • "The hallways and great halls were used for film sets, the architecture is beautiful. A colourful blue stained glass is in one of the chapels."
  • "Also there us the hallway where many scenes were filmed and there was a tree to hang your wishes, with magical flying candles."

Cons:

  • -

Voluntary Donation and Entry Fee

Pros:

  • "It's free entry, but we gave a donation. The upkeep of the building must be huge, it would be sad to see it ever go into disrepair so I was happy to pay to visit this amazing place."
  • "Low entrance fee but we donated additional, this is well worth the time and effort to visit and we will continue to go there regularly."

Cons:

  • "Upon immediate entry, we were blown away, giving our voluntary £5 donation towards whatever they need to keep the cathedral standing."
  • "It's free to walk about but they encourage a donation. Parking is right at the cathedral when available."

Guided Tours and Educational Value

Pros:

  • "I highly recommend taking a tour with one of the guides. They are very knowledgeable, and I found it all fascinating."
  • "Absolutely gorgeous piece of architecture. We did the catacombs tour and learned so much! Definitely recommend doing one of the add-on tours as you get to see parts of the cathedral that are not open to the general public."

Cons:

  • "The guided tour of the crypt was pretty useless and overpriced (about £4 each for about 20 minutes), as there's very little to see down there."
