  • "Was overpriced would not go back I'm afraid."
  • "I wish they'd cut the entry fee in half as it is too expensive at £9.50."
  • "Alot of the rooms were out of bounds because of covid but you still had to pay the full entrance fee!"
  • "have to have an annual pass so useless to tourists"
  • "No vegan options in cafe for other half so we went elsewhere"
  • "Cafe food was good but a bit pricey."

Accessibility

Pros:

  • "To start with they have installed a lift so all three levels of the fort are assessable."
  • "A lift to get wheelchair users was a bonus to all the levels"
  • "there is a lift to help you go to all 3 levels which was handy as I'm on crutches"
  • "Most of the site is accessible by wheelchair."
  • "Much of it is wheelchair accessible."

  • "they've done their very best to make it as wheelchair accessible as possible for a historic building"

Cons:

  • "The ghost tunnel was dark, not quite as long as I was expecting and they had noises playing fake ghostly sounds, meaning we couldn't hear anything."
  • "the stairs outside can be slippery"
  • "We visited on a VERY wet and windy day - the ramparts were closed due to the weather."
  • "There was a gale blowing when we visited so we could not go round the ramparts."
  • "Would not recommend for very small children, lots of trip hazards to negotiate and parents would need to be very watchful below and above ground."
  • "The ghost passageway can be too much for younger children"
  • "the lift was out of user when we visited"

Staff and Service

Cons:

  • "This was clearly communicated to the lady behind the till, who ignored our need for a little haste on completing our ticket purchase"
  • "Avoid. Spent 20 minutes in the queue"
  • "Staff don't seem to know what they're doing"
  • "the slowest typing lady in the universe trying to take details to give us tickets"
  • "There was an older gentleman who worked there, he decided to attempt to tell my son off (for returning a ball to some other children) to which the gentleman was the one who got told off by me as that isn't acceptable."
  • "Waiting time to enter wasn't great, one person trying to admit every body who needed to pay and then season ticket holders/prepaid."
  • "The only thing we didn't like which detracted from the atmosphere of the place was that staff cars were parked in the courtyard of the fort, so you couldn't get a photo of the fort without cars in the picture."

Facilities and Exhibits

Pros:

  • "I applaud all those involved in turning the abandoned Fort into an interesting museum."
  • "Built to thwart Napoleon this superb, well maintained historical fortification should not be missed."
  • "A great museum, over 3 levels."
  • "The ghost passage is well worth it."
  • "The fort is a fascinating place explaining its history from Napoleonic times to the Cold War."
  • "The exhibitions are fascinating and cover all the various time periods the fort was in use."
  • "Lots of history and exhibits on three levels with a lift for anyone not keen on steps."

Cons:

  • "unfortunately the lift had mechanical problems the day we were there but the fact they have actually got one is very refreshing."
  • "Only drawbacks really is some parts look a little dated and certain parts are quite crowded sometimes."
  • "Alot of the rooms were out of bounds because of covid but you still had to pay the full entrance fee!"
  • "Had an enjoyable couple of hours at the Fort, unusual to be able to access as many rooms as you are able to here. The facility is run by volunteers who are doing a good job, unfortunately I did find the displays below ground rather frustrating in that rather than have them laid out from the start of the site to last occupation you go from room to room with a jumble of the history."
  • "The ghost walk was interesting but could have done more with it."
  • "The cafe was busy, which is understandable in the summer holidays, so expect to wait for food and drinks."
  • "the lift was out of user when we visited"
