Experience

Pros:

  • "What a great all round experience steam train then a small boat ferry across Barmouth harbour."
  • "You can easily make a day of it by combining a trip on here with getting the ferry into Barmouth, walking along the beach or to Morfa Mawddach, or having a picnic."

  • "Caught the ferry over and then onto the train. Staff all very friendly and welcoming, the train journey along the beach and into Fairbourne was lovely."
  • "Great fun, crossing the river on the little ferry then onto the train."
  • "What an amazing little railway."

Cons:

  • "Inches from the sea but because of the sea wall you see NOTHING."
  • "Total shambles, You sit on a hard wooden seat with metal bars for a back rest then crawl along with A couple of houses as a view."
  • "Nice train ride quite expensive for what it is though and the seats aren't very comfortable."
  • "Unfortunately went out of season so was closed nothing in fairbourne really bus driver gave us wrong time for return journey had to wait 2 hours for correct bus back would not go again."
  • "That 10 minutes made us have to wait an hour and a half for the national rail back."
  • "Shame you can't see out to sea on most of it (as it's behind the flood defences)!"
  • "Health and safety hazard. Would not recommend."

Accessibility

Pros:

  • "Can access with a wheelchair but best to prebook so that accessible carriage is available."
  • "Although the carriages are small there is plenty of room to sit comfortably and there is even room for folded pushchairs and for wheelchairs too."
  • "Accessible by boat taxi from Barmouth too."
  • "We had a disabled child with us! Fairbourne Railway staff were AMAZINGLY helpful!!!"
  • "Although there are no toilets at the main station there are some over the road, very clean and supported by the community."

Cons:

  • "Word of warning, the doors and very low on the carriages, mind your head, I know it hurts."
  • "If you have mobility issues, be aware that covered compartments are very small and might pose a problem for you."
  • "a nice little train ride but no good if tour your disabled as tour need to cross over on a small boat and also costs extra but they dont tell you that."
  • "If you want to go to Barmouth, this is not the way to go. You may have to wait over an hour to get across the estuary as the ferry can only carry 8 passengers."
  • "Carriages are a bit tight to access. Usually a couple of trains per hour."

Value

Pros:

  • "Great to support these volunteers with their 12 1/4 inch railway."
  • "Absolutely great little train might not go far but well worth the little journey, and friendly people."
  • "Great day out with the kids."
  • "Well worth a ride."
  • "There is a ferry across to Barmouth as well as an added experience that is good value for money."
  • "Cost was £27 not bad for 4 people and 2 dogs. Highly recommended."
  • "The prices are very reasonable and you have the choice of an indoor, outdoor and indoor carriage with windows so would suit all tastes."

Cons:

  • "A bit expensive though."
  • "Train was good, quite expensive for what it was."
  • "Had a brilliant time! Bit expensive for what we got!"
  • "My little boy loves trains and this is just his size. It's expensive though. 19 pound for 2 adults."
  • "The train ride was fun, but quite expensive."
  • "Very expensive, for 4xadults, 2xchildren and 2xOAPs was about £38 for a 10min ride! The majority of it runs below the level of the sea wall so the view is pretty poor."
  • "Very expensive for what it is - absolutely not value for money."
