Ambiance and Design

Pros:

  • "Coal office's dramatic entrance with the open kitchen and lively ambiance was a sight to behold."
  • "We were sat opposite the open kitchen where you can see all the actions happening! very fun."
  • "Beautiful place, set in the heart of granary square."
  • "Wandered into coal office on my own and was seated at the counter overlooking the kitchen with a 'prime' view."
  • "Housed in a beautiful older building with modern glassy interior."

Cons:

  • "Ambiance could be described as lively or loud."
  • "Only downside was the small size of our table. When the food plates arrived it was a bit of a squeeze."
  • "The music is a little loud if you sit in the bar area, so if you want a proper conversation, ask to be seated further back in the restaurant as it’s much quieter."
  • "The problems are that the music is too loud (it’s cool but too loud to have a conversation) and constant interruptions from the staff pouring water, asking you if you like the food, cleaning the table, … is OTT!"

Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food was the best I’ve eaten in a number of years, every single thing was delicious."
  • "The chefs, sous chefs, and waiters were all amazing! The food was delicious and perfect."
  • "All the breads and dips are delicious, get them all! Salad is very fresh and tasty."
  • "Every dish I have tried in about 10 visits brought flavors and finesse."
  • "I am not afraid of calling the Coal Office one of the very best restaurants in London."
  • "Food was great. But they messed up our order so after starters didn’t get anything for an hour."
  • "Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The food was amazing, service friendly and the atmosphere was buzzing."
  • "Wonderful anniversary lunch! So much flavour in everything we ordered!"

Cons:

  • "Hit or miss dishes. The second time around the polenta wasn't as flavorful."
  • "We had a table for two, and we spent over £250, and were told at 19:30 we had to leave as there were people waiting for the table."
  • "Had a bad tasting orange juice."
  • "The dishes were all very tasty, very highly recommended to stop by here for a fantastic meal. However, we were brought a salad that we did not order and on our bill we were charged for a £49 worth wine which we had not ordered."

Service

Pros:

  • "Staff were super helpful, and we even had a free taste of one of the plates that we’d seen the chefs preparing for other diners!"
  • "Amazing service, delicious food with a twist on it."
  • "The staff were very nice. The food was delicious and perfect."
  • "The staff is lovely and the details on their plates and cutlery are just the finest!!"
  • "We were shown to our table, on the high seats no less, adjacent to the formidable chefs who were thrilled with our company."

Cons:

  • "Service was pretty good, but we were told every 10 minutes that we had a deadline. Completely ruined the enjoyment of the food and the rare night out with my friends."
  • "We were initially drawn into the restaurant by the sounds of oriental music filling the street outdoors."
  • "The service was very slow. We ordered a dish that didn't arrive, a wine I ordered to have with the dinner was nowhere to be seen and then when it did arrive they had the wrong colour."
  • "Very noisy, stressful environment, the place needs sound absorber - impossible to have conversation."
