Food Quality

Pros:

  • "Delicious tea and cakes. Really good treat!"
  • "The restaurant itself was great, with plenty to choose from on the lunch time menu."
  • "We all felt that it was very reasonably priced for the quality of food."
  • "Love this venue. Great choice of quality cakes and snacks."
  • "Eggs benedict or smashed avocado, both amazing."
  • "We enjoyed our treat out. Lovely food, well presented."
  • "The coffee and walnut cake which was full of juicy walnuts and was absolutely amazing."
  • "We had kids pancakes, toast, smoothies and hot drinks. Would definitely visit again."

Cons:

  • "The meagre portion of what was supposed to hollandaise sauce was a sour, vinegary, gelatinous blob."
  • "The worst though was as soon as I put my coffee cup down a waitress came and without saying a word to me removed the cup and plate."
  • "The avocado on toast was a 7/10 I left hungry that could have been me or the eggs haha."
  • "The raspberry and white chocolate muffin was a plain muffin with a squashed raspberry smeared on the top."
  • "The coffee was lovely but the cake was dreadful. It lacked flavour and the buttercream was hard."
  • "My corned beef slice looked like it fell onto the plate from a height then slid as the base pastry was so sloppy."
  • "Drinks were ok and cakes ok too, but for a place as busy as this, I expected the cakes to be something special."
  • "The cakes were delicious, overall, very good!"

Staff and Service

Pros:

  • "However the best part was the staff, super kind and friendly, smiley and helpful."
  • "The staff were very friendly and despite experiencing a bit of a hardware failure with the till."
  • "Staff attentive and chatty, large seating area indoor and out."
  • "The staff were very friendly and efficient and were happy to add chutney for my 'stand alone' cheese scone."
  • "Visited with some friends on 20th July and were overwhelmed with the choice of delicious cakes and five stars plus to Deborah."
  • "Lovely sunny terrace and the food was fantastic. Lovely coffee and the muffin was tremendous!!! Great value and very polite staff."
  • "The manager was attentive but his staff really let the side down."
  • "Staff pleasant and helpful. Delicious coffee/teas coupled with fantastic array of cakes etc."

Cons:

  • "The whole experience was worsened by the complete lack of customer service by the person on the till who barked ‘TABLE NUMBER!?’ instead of ‘hello’."
  • "Finally arrived but was given bacon and egg in 2 slices of dry unbuttered bread not the roll/breadcake ordered."
  • "Food is fine ... Woman behind till is very brusque. A smile you not go amiss."
  • "The service was extremely friendly and efficient. Deborah in particular was an amazing hostess making sure we were given VIP treatment."
  • "However, the service left a lot to be desired."
  • "The Assistant behind counter was practically deaf and could not hear anyone's order."
  • "The female manager lied and said they had run out of everything? Unacceptable disgusting treatment."
  • "The kitchen closes at 4pm and the restaurant closes at 5pm. This and other places that close as soon as you want to eat, I thought we'd left behind in the seventies."

Ambience and Location

Pros:

  • "It wasn't your 'quirky' type that you normally expect and so it was set in a nice, spacious part of the Spanish City building."
  • "Location was excellent, right on the sea front and a not so long walk away from Whitley Bay Metro."
  • "Beautiful tea shop in the Spanish area. Tables inside and outside with sea views."
  • "The seating areas are spacious with plenty of room between tables."
  • "The bacon sandwich and crab sandwiches were delicious - yes we will be back again."
  • "Outdoor seating that is ideal to keep your bikes close by. Great selection of treats and hot drinks."
  • "Valerie's Tearoom at Spanish City is simply the best coffee / breakfast place along the Whitley Bay section of the coast."
  • "Part of Spanish city the food was good value for money the young staff serving customers were well presented and very polite and friendly."

Cons:

  • "Beautiful place to stop for lunch. Expensive compared to other places but food tasted great. Could have done with a few extra tables outside."
  • "Arrived at 16:00 to find that you can't buy anything savoury after 4pm. I can understand hot food but to stop serving sandwiches an hour before you close is ludicrous."
  • "The place was very busy but I placed an order and had to change it for my father, it was pretty complicated."
  • "Needs tidying up outside Canopy badly needs cleaning Shame Because food is first class."
  • "The music that was playing just made you soooo relaxed and you can feel special because of the staff."
  • "The cafe itself is nicely laid out, well decorated and comfortable."
  • "Lovely for tea, premises are oldy worldy I thought, staff very friendly and helpful."
  • "Had afternoon Tea here on the corner near the sea front also sold cakes buns etc parking was a bit difficult but found place eventually."
