Atmosphere & Setting

Pros:

  • "A truly great ‘Destination’ place to visit for a drink and to take in all the history of the pub and the village."
  • "What a beautiful pub with an amazing setting outside."
  • "Leafy green, spacious and sheltered on the outside; inviting, cosy and dog-friendly on the inside."
  • "Really nice tree shady gardens make for a nice environment for an afternoon or early evening drink."
  • "A beautiful setting next to the church."
  • "The pub is gorgeous and the garden absolutely lovely."
  • "Pretty gardens with big willow trees and gunnera by the stream."

Cons:

  • "Hot water in the loos was nearly burnt my fiancé's hands. Men's urinals were leaking."
  • "Also, very very slow."
  • "Its a little off putting with people sitting on the nearby grass verge watching you eat and clearly waiting for you to finish so they can have your table."
  • "It’s location is great, tucked down in a little valley, it can be tricky to find sometimes, especially when the fog comes down."
  • "The small hamlet is situated at the end of a long, steep, narrow and twisty lane, and the native drivers take no prisoners. You have been warned!!"
  • "If your website says you'll be open, surely you should be open! Drove for 40 mins to see it closed."
  • "quite relaxed attitude to distancing and safety for my liking (none of the staff wore face masks, menu boards were brought to the table, no social distancing measure appeared to be in place)"

Food Quality

Pros:

  • "I have had the whole John Dory which was excellent and the wife says that the fish and chips are the best we have had in Cornwall."
  • "Everthing was so flavoursome, whether it's meat, fish or vegetable you won't be disappointed."
  • "Every dish was a major hit, including vegan option."
  • "The steak and the mussels were both incredible, large portions and very reasonably priced."
  • "All dishes were presented with style, the quality was easy to discern, the portions hearty and satisfying."
  • "Food just great, perfect for the stormy night outside and the open log fire inside."
  • "The food was divine and cooked to perfection, you get everything you pay for."

Cons:

  • "Food was outstanding but limited for vegetarians."
  • "Starters - poor. An underwhelming focaccia."
  • "The food was good, but, a little disappointing - perhaps our expectations were too high."
  • "but be warned the price per meal isn't what you pay as you need to pay extra for your chips, potatoes and vegetables separately on some meals so makes it a bit expensive."
  • "The roast potatoes were virtually inedible as they were so salty."
  • "Gritty mussels unbearable to eat without hurting my teeth."
  • "Most of us had roast pork, which was poor quality (?reformed meat) and extremely fatty."

Service

Pros:

  • "Service - ok. Nice people."
  • "They offered us free desserts, which we accepted, and were well worth it."
  • "Service friendly and helpful, we loved it."
  • "Service was really great. Professional, unobtrusive, attentive."

  • "Staff were excellent, very welcoming and very knowledgeable of the menu."
  • "The team here I found to be universally warm, hospitable and possessed of good, high standards. Service was friendly and unusually competent."

Cons:

  • "But didn't ask how I liked my steak which was a bit of a fail."
  • "Service was slow and passive, but not unfriendly."
  • "Rude bar person, confronted about checking in/number of party after we had been seated."
  • "Poor attitude from most of the staff."
  • "Found it difficult to get a table for 2 about 10 days before."
  • "The only down side is that it is so busy a booking, often over a week ahead, is usually required for inside seating."
  • "Servers were rude."

Value

Pros:

  • "Fairly priced for quality of food and service."
  • "Even the beer is (for the area) reasonably priced and it is worth a visit just to take in the unspoilt bar."
  • "We thought this represented good value for the high quality."
  • "Price is very fair for excellent portion sizes that carry so much flavour."
  • "Delicious Sunday roasts with an excellent selection of accompanying vegetables made this a superb meal that was reasonably priced."
  • "All of this was very reasonably priced."
  • "A haven of good food from a limited menu, well presented and sensibly priced for the quality."

Cons:

  • "Was probably on the ££ scale of £-£££."
  • "Can be a little pricey but as it is only 200m away from my accommodation that is fine by me."
  • "Allergens aside, it was a really disappointing meal. Small portions with a hefty price tag."
  • "We thought it had got a lot dearer, and the menu had got a bit fancy."
