Tour Guides

Pros:

  • "David was our awesome guide and really bought things to life and made our tour much more fun."
  • "The actor, David, who took us through the guided part of the tour, was incredible."
  • "Our tour guide David was awesome he played all the characters so well it felt like you had gone back in time."
  • "The little guided part at the start is absolutely outstanding. Matthew our guide was phenomenal."
  • "Although Stirling Old Town Jail is a very touristy place, it was a wonderful experience. The guide Matthew was a wonderful actor."
  • "The tour guide, David, was very entertaining and informative."
  • "The Tour was amazing. Matthew did a great performance and you feel history coming to life."
  • "Really a great experience (we did both the escape room and the tour) and would thoroughly recommend. These people really know all the history."

Cons:

  • "tour guide was a funny guy however the tour in itself was lacklustre. Expected to be able to see the actual cell blocks and everything inbetween, very disappointing."
  • "This might be nice when they offer tours, which we thought we were going to get. The self-guided tour is rather disappointing."
  • "However, what truly set this museum apart was the outstanding performance of David, the actor who brought the history to life. His portrayal was nothing short of remarkable."
  • "The "guide" is an audio tour and has little to say about the jail itself. There are not artifacts and most doors are closed off as the building is being used for work space."

Escape Rooms

Pros:

  • "We began with the escape room. You are given one hour to solve the mystery and you are taken upstairs into a really old circular room."
  • "The escape room was a lot of fun with very interesting riddles."
  • "Escape room - I would recommend as suitable for dogs that are good at settling, as it's a long time in one room."
  • "Me and 4 of my friends did one of the escape rooms. Adam, who led us up, stayed in the room to help us with clues if we needed them."
  • "Amazing visit the escape room kept us on our toes but we managed yo escape lots of great puzzles."
  • "Great escape room experience with my 10 year old son and his friends. Friendly staff helped us along."
  • "We did an escape room and a prison tour afterwards. Brilliant experiences! The escape room was a lot of fun."

Cons:

  • "For the money (it's not cheap), I'd like to see us in more than one room, with maybe other challenges to solve."
  • "We were able to complete the task with 3 minutes left of the 1 hour. Afterwards there was plenty of facepalm moments when we were told about the 'red herrings' and obvious clues we missed."
  • "Our previous experiences of escape rooms has been in more than one room, so it would have been great if this has been the case here too."

Facilities

Pros:

  • "Free parking."
  • "There is a small shop with great merchandise."
  • "Dogs are welcome and the staff love them."
  • "All staff friendly and helpful."
  • "The 360° view from the roof of the jail is fantastic too."
  • "They had sanitary towels, etc in the toilets too which is such a small detail to point to here but it was just further proof that they really thought about their guests."
  • "There is plenty of interesting facts and information, all displayed and organised in an easy to follow manner."
  • "Lots of information around the Jail. App was also very informative."

Cons:

  • "Unfortunately, there is no cafe or place to eat, but there are toilets inside and free parking."
  • "The inside of the building no longer resembles the old jail and the experience is nothing more than walking through undecorated rooms with informational plaques on the walls."
  • "The website said nothing about the proper guided tours only being on the weekends due to short staff, so we were left to just wonder with an audio device we could hardly hear."
  • "The radio phones they give you for information are not really any good abd difficult to work."

Accessibility and Viewing

Pros:

  • "Great views from the jail."
  • "You can see for miles. It is a good day out and I would recommend visiting once but there's not enough to bring you back a second time."
  • "Good value for money. We arrived for the 10.15 session, met by a very pleasant young man who was very helpful and informative."
  • "The views over the prison from the top floor are great. Wheelchairs and the disabled have easy access as there is a lift."

  • "The building itself offers great views of Stirling, and is of historical interest in general."
  • "Great views from the top of the tower. It was pouring with rain when I visited but when visibility is good the view stretches all the way to the Firth of Forth and Edinburgh."

Cons:

  • "No pram allowed - was not a problem for us but handy to know for others."
  • "Some parts are out of limits for wheelchair users if anyone going is disabled but the rest was great and great value for money on entry."
  • "If you have accessibility requirements or aren't good with stairs you might have to give that a miss though as requires climbing a spiral staircase."
  • "It is a fair walk uphill to get to the old town where the jail is located, i would definitely say not suitable for anybody who cant walk a distance."
