Food Quality

Pros:

  • "Hand cut chips were very nice."
  • "Ordered from Festive menu, traditional turkey with all trimmings, belly pork, veal pie, dessert sticky toffee pudding."
  • "Some of the best pub food in London - particularly liked the steak sandwich and chicken Milanese."
  • "We had roast dinners which were lovely; the roast potatoes were yummy and I loved the mix of veg- carrot and swede mash- a rare find, courgette ribbons and cabbage."
  • "One of the best fish and chips I’ve had at a pub! The fish was perfectly cooked although the batter maybe was just a tad over crunchy."
  • "Had the mix roast and is one of the top roasts I’ve had in London."
  • "The pastry was fresh, crunchy, the chicken was succulent and the tarragon sauce was too die for."

Cons:

  • "The battered cod was very greasy for me."
  • "I ordered the veggie roast and it was not great, very blend and the veggie roast was not roasted but appeared to be deep fried and was extremely oily."
  • "Potatoes where bland and had been sitting around too long before serving, making them dried out and horrible."
  • "The fish itself was very disappointing as it was mostly battered with a thin bit of fish inside (with the skin)."
  • "Horrible Sunday roast pork belly. Very little meat, 90% fat and it was dried out and horrible."
  • "The roast potatoes tasted like they was left over from last week and the vegetable gravy was more like water and tasteless."
  • "The roast potatoes had clearly been reheated as they had that texture you get when they're old and the roast beef was overcooked and chewy."

Atmosphere & Decor

Pros:

  • "The pub has a classic London pub feel."
  • "Stunning old-world style (large) pub with fabulous staff and a fantastic atmosphere."
  • "Great pub, lively atmosphere and usually very busy."
  • "Comfortable, cosy and friendly pub with typical grub menu as well as pub snacks up front and dining area at the back."
  • "The atmosphere was lovely, great for a date or just with family and friends."
  • "Feels like a pub should feel. Beautiful building, great vibe, lovely service, and a drinks selection that covers every palate."
  • "An old, rustic, wood heavy pub that has a great cosy atmosphere especially for those long winter nights."

Cons:

  • "This place has a nasty vibe, and attracts unfriendly, pretentious customers."
  • "Ambiance is unfortunately lost in an establishment of this proportion and the atmosphere is a bit morose."
  • "Everything you could criticise Crouch End for on a bad day, in one establishment: entitled, overpriced and up its own backside."
  • "Odd distribution of table sizes/locations means as a couple you either have to share a 4/6 seat table in the middle of the room or be crammed onto the 2 seat tables along the side of the smaller bar."
  • "Nowadays it's noisy and crowded, especially in the Summer months in the garden."
  • "Sadly, the only places to sit are high tables, all the normal tables are gone."
  • "Don't sit close to the toilets though, they reek or urine."

Service

Pros:

  • "Always friendly in there. Lots of staff to help and always suggesting drinks etc."
  • "Lovely, friendly staff. Highly recommend."
  • "Fantastic service!"
  • "The staff work so hard and always wear a smile."
  • "Service was outstanding as well."
  • "The service was top-notch - friendly and helpful."
  • "Staff behind the bar are always super friendly too."

Cons:

  • "Service can be a little inconsistent and any 'special' menus aren't that great."
  • "Service very slow (we waited about half an hour between courses)."
  • "the service was also poor."
  • "Service was pretty poor though, mostly very slow and they forgot to bring my husband's second beer."
  • "Good atmosphere, but at times, staff were too busy chatting to the kitchen staff, had to wait a while for them to finish and notice us."
  • "Unfortunately we were met with an unfriendly and unwelcoming vibe, staff who couldn't be bothered to look our way let alone make eye contact with us."
  • "Sadly the management have failed as afar as personal skills are concerned so this is yet another 'corporate' pub - after 3 years I still don't know who the manager is."

Value for Money

Pros:

  • "Paid for 2 meals at £14/per and actually got 4 meals out of it. Superb value for money."
  • "Really good food and drink for decent prices - not always the case in London!"
  • "The prices are fair and the portions are generous."
  • "Had an absolutely banging Christmas dinner this year which was tasty, beautifully presented and plentiful, making it excellent value for money."
  • "All the dishes were about £15 and worth every penny. Wish all 'pub food' was like this."

Cons:

  • "Dropped one star purely because dishes are a bit on the pricey side but the food was very nice."
  • "Neither food nor drink were cheap. To be expected in that part of town I guess."
  • "The prices have wildly outgrown their britches. It's silly- I can eat at that lovely new French place on Middle Lane or really pretty much any of the fun Highgate options for better food and more reasonable prices."
  • "However, beer prices are ludicrously high at £6.50 for a pint."
  • "Felt robbed by £14 double brandy while the drains stank inside."
  • "Menu's pricey and not top notch; £13 seemed a bit much for my standard salmon and lentil dish."
  • "I expected a lot better for the price they charge."
