Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The vegan rice pudding was a real eye opener, lovely and creamy just like granny used to make, but very light on my stomach."
  • "The burgers and chips were top quality delicious while my daughter's macaroni and cheese also fantastic."
  • "Food was really great - wife had fish and chips and said it was superb - I went for the ham, egg and chips."
  • "Gorgeous roasts, the best we've had in ages, burger and desserts."
  • "One of the best fish finger sandwiches I’ve had evs!"
  • "The food was fantastic with a brilliant range of Gluten Free from the menu."
  • "The food is cooked from scratch, and the bangers and mash were the BEST I have ever eaten."

Cons:

  • "If your looking for undercooked basic food at high prices and to be served by teenagers or rude managers head here."
  • "Very expensive food & it was horrendous! Greasy fat deep fried coley( not even cod or haddock as advised)."
  • "Food was poor quality and overpriced, main was cold and desert was disgusting."
  • "The food was disappointing from such a lovely looking menu. Spicy chicken burger with no spice (or flavour) and unexplained cold beansprouts and a tasteless and dry, basic fish finger (goujon) sandwich."
  • "The food was inedible & the service awful... The lasagne was burnt yet freezing cold."
  • "The whole meal tasted like it was in the microwave."
  • "Food was below average (my chicken katsu burger was mostly bun and a bland sauce)."

Service

Pros:

  • "Glad we gave it a go! Dog friendly too."
  • "The service was very good and it was a nice atmosphere."
  • "Great food and staff were helpful and lovely."
  • "Staff are great, friendly and attentive."
  • "The young man who served us was very well dressed and very polite."
  • "Staff were very friendly and attentive."
  • "Excellent service from a very bubbly female crew behind the main inside bar."

Cons:

  • "When I eventually showed the waitress the plastic that my daughter has bitten into she took it to the kitchen came out & said 'Sorry but it’s not our fault as we don’t make the fish on site it’s our suppliers fault and we will have to send it off to them but I won’t charge you for those.'"
  • "He got very much in my personal space, was quite aggressive and I ended up physically shaking and had to tell him to get out of my face."
  • "The service has gone downhill massively; young teenage girls that don't have the experience to serve customers or deal with a complicated number of customers."
  • "The food has always been good here. But the service is truly terrible."
  • "Sadly forgot to put 1 of our food orders through so 1 out of 4 didn't eat."
  • "They weren’t remotely attentive no waiting staff around, no food coming out and didn’t take our drinks order for a while - other people complained."
  • "Appalling service, waited over an hour for food only came when complained."

Ambiance and Setting

Pros:

  • "Lovely pub, lovely inside and out."
  • "On the hottest day ever, we were passing the Barley Mow, a picturesque traditional roadside inn."
  • "Lovely setting, lots of seating and lovely kids play area."
  • "Easy to find, lots of parking and the setting is rather good too."
  • "Lovely place for families on a summer afternoon. Excellent play area for kids with wonderful view of South Downs."
  • "Passed this pub and thought it looked lovely, beautifully lit with twinkling lights as we drove past."
  • "Stopped here today for lunch, was surprised how nice it was inside. Nicely decorated, and lovely and cosy."

Cons:

  • "We were sat outside and had 3 picnic tables, two of which were rickety and rocked when you sat at them."
  • "Tables outside falling apart and need a good bit of varnish. Covered in birds mess."
  • "No atmosphere, stuffed foxes and other birds hanging on walls.."
  • "The main entrance from the roadside had a disheveled appearance with an A Board blown down in the winds."
  • "But the pervading reek of stale beer, and the fact that our feet were sticking resolutely to the carpet, detracted somewhat from the ambience."
  • "Also beware if you take your child into the ladies toilet next to the restaurant. There are at least a couple of framed cartoon strip pictures on the wall with very rude words on them."
  • "The train at the back should either be removed or the door locked up tight, not safe for little ones."

Value

Pros:

  • "Fantastic value for money too."
  • "The food is fairly priced and is very good."
  • "Good real ale and the food was priced about right."
  • "Food was amazing, good sized portions too - the double burger and chips had me beat."
  • "The food is good. It's pub grub (fish & chips, salads, burgers, pie) but really tasty."
  • "Food was very nice, freshly cooked, service was fast and friendly."
  • "Great country pub, the food is consistently good."

Cons:

  • "The extortionate prices for over cooked and tough as old boot steaks, the ploughmans was served with stale Tesco economy normal bread as was the rubbery lasagne."
  • "Service was slow and poor. The food portions when they eventually arrived were way too big and lacked any kind of quality or presentation."
  • "It was a thoroughly disappointing and overpriced experience."
  • "The only drawback was the automatic 10% service charge added to the bill. Even though we paid at the bar at time of ordering. It must be said that the barmaid took it off before I paid."
  • "Classic pub food very over priced for what it is and they add on 10 % service charge for sitting outside and poor service!!"
  • "Dissapointing and overpriced food set in a beautiful backdrop of East Sussex Downs."
  • "Food overpriced and small portions."
