Scenery and Environment

Pros:

  • "A scene straight out of Lord of the Rings. Very New Zealand like scenery with a forest, lake and a back drop of snow covered mountains."
  • "A real gem of yet more superb scenery in the Lake District."
  • "Absolutely stunning, who knew such a place existed."
  • "Tarn Hows is a must visit. It offers stunningly beautiful scenery and enjoyable walks around the tarns."
  • "One of the most beautiful places in the world. Serene, captivating and stunning views."
  • "Very pretty tarn where we stopped to sit and relax for an hour or so."
  • "Stunning scenery. Even the drive there from Grange over sands was breathtaking."

Cons:

  • "At the moment where the logging is going on it’s very muddy."
  • "The storm has really taken this place down. There are fallen down trees everywhere and the clean up is still ongoing."
  • "Has changed a lot from before covid, doesn't seem to be looked after as much, unfortunately."
  • "Sadly marred by the disgusting habit of some irresponsible dog owners who think it's acceptable to leave plastic bags full of dog faeces along the pathways."
  • "The setting this year was not so great for us - let down only by negligence of less aware/appreciative visitors."

Accessibility and Paths

Pros:

  • "Such a lovely walk & great for the kids as the path is really clear."
  • "The paths are wide and well maintained. They are suitable for all ages."
  • "A properly paved path circuits the whole tarn giving different views along the way."
  • "The man made lake is easy to get around on constructed paths and offered sheltered views of the water."
  • "Lovely lake and good path round it. Suitable for pushchairs."
  • "The paths have all been upgraded for accessible access and unless you stray off the path your boots (optional) won’t be getting muddy."
  • "With flat path good for buggies and mobility scooters (available to hire)."

Cons:

  • "The path down to the waterfall is not for the less able, it is often a scramble both going down and coming back up."
  • "I noticed that it's advertised as wheel chair friendly, however you will have to be quite fit to push the chair up some of the gravel paths around the tarn."
  • "Took a walk anti-clockwise round the water and finished with a visit to the waterfall. The path to the waterfall is not ideal for less mobile walkers."
  • "Some of the walks are restricted for access, with 'banner fencing' near to 'soft edges', because of the need for maintenance."
  • "The climb down to it could be slippery if was wet on the rocks."
  • "Accessible path for pushchairs and mobility scooters, though steeper in places."
  • "The road back down had such a significant pothole its damaged my car too."
