Gardens and Plant Life

Pros:

  • "It is beautifully designed and, in summer at least, full of flowers, tree ferns and gunnera plants, all planned around a series of ponds connected by streams."
  • "Loved the layouts and overall effect."
  • "Lovely gardens with huge plants to give a rain forest feel."
  • "Great walks, impressive giant plants and trees arranged around a deep valley."
  • "Well maintained sub-tropical gardens with a variety of unusual (for the UK) plants and trees."
  • "So many beautiful plants, bamboo, ferns, trees etc."
  • "Walking through giant rhubarb and a sea of hydrangea is absolutely breathtaking."

Cons:

  • "Beautiful place but to be honest I was a little disappointed. The Gunnera and bamboo are spectacular, but, along with the hydrangea, there is an awful lot of it so I found the garden a bit samey."
  • "Some of the outer areas look a bit work-in-progress."
  • "Only thing I would like to see is extension of the amazing planting to all extremities of the garden."
  • "The only disappointment was the private beach... it was pebbled and quite boring and dull."

Beach and Sea

Pros:

  • "The beach is lovely, and there is picnic tables for you to eat some lunch or have an ice cream in the warmer months."
  • "Loved the private beach, we just sat there for an hour and had ice-cream."
  • "Sat by the beach very calming."
  • "Lovely little pebble beach with crystal clear waters."
  • "The beach although very stoney is a nice little.place to sit and relax for a bit have an ice cream or drink from the hut that's there."
  • "The beach is very cutely tucked away from the rest of the world."
  • "The beach slopes gently to the sea."

Cons:

  • "Beach was quite bleak."
  • "Down on the beach no toilets and cafe sells ice cream and tea coffee only."
  • "No toilets at the beach area so use the toilets in the building at the top."
  • "Could do with loo's at the beach area and food not just ice cream and bad coffee."
  • "No toilets at this cafe, only at main entrance to gardens."
  • "Take swimming stuff for the beach but it's a bit hard on the feet as it's pebbles."

Accessibility and Facilities

Pros:

  • "Staff are friendly and majority of the site is dog friendly."
  • "The walks are clearly signposted one way (under Covid-19 guidelines) with plenty of options for accessible routes."
  • "It has recently undergone an accessible upgrade, making it the perfect walk for abled and disabled people alike."
  • "It's an amazing place and is wheelchair friendly and dog-friendly."
  • "Very accessible routes for those that require them, as well as alternative routes with steps."
  • "Well signposted throughout with many different routes through the garden for people of all abilities (including step free routes.)"
  • "Different routes to allow Wheelchair or Pushchair to see the garden without steps."

Cons:

  • "Perhaps not ideal if you have a very reactive dog as paths are narrow."
  • "I imagine those with trouble walking hilly areas would find most of this garden inaccessible."
  • "Even though it’s wheelchair accessible it’s steep."
  • "The map was exceptionally difficult to understand and not really enough sign posts around."
  • "They had scooters available for hire, but we had mum in a wheelchair. I wish we had been told the terrain was rough for the wheelchair not impossible, but was hard work on the way back up."
  • "Whole place is dog friendly but must be kept on leads even on the beach."
  • "Some of which have good wheelchair access, but not all."

Value and Cost

Pros:

  • "The price of the ticket is on par with others in Cornwall."
  • "£15 entry fee (adults) is reasonable."
  • "Not Expensive to get in."
  • "The adult tickets are £15 each."
  • "Entry price to the gardens is very reasonable (cheaper than various National Trust places, Eden and Heligan)."
  • "Reasonable entry fees compared with other gardens in the area, so very affordable."
  • "The entry price is soooo worth it."

Cons:

  • "Sad to see they’re charging so much for entry, when they aren’t claiming VAT back through Gift Aid on their tickets."
  • "The entry fee at £10,50 for one adult is a bit steep, but definitely worth it."
  • "Disappointed that the Gardeners World 2 for 1 offer is not applicable to use at these beautiful gardens......the price of £16.50 per person is rather steep."
  • "Feel you really need to have a passion for plants to pay this sort of price....I know many people who wouldn't dream of paying this sort of price...."
  • "Unfortunately when we arrived it turned out to be still closed due to COVID, although I still paid a full price for the tickets."
