Food Quality

Pros:

  • "5 awesome Beef and Ale pies led to 5 clean plates, washed down with a great selection of local beer."
  • "Really enjoyed the beef and ale pie and a pint of Moor Ale."
  • "Every meal was fantastic, my partner had the fish and chips, a huge portion and very tasty."
  • "Had a very nice Steak and Stilton Pie for lunch, my wife had Thai fish cakes, very tasty, very filling, no room for desert."
  • "Easily the best place I've ever eaten. I had the vegetarian lasagne which came with garlic bread (enough to warrant a return visit by itself!)."
  • "The Steak & Stilton Pie is truly the best I've ever had: beautiful tender trimmed meat - and plenty of it."
  • "The steak and stilton pie was to die for. The buttery pastry melted in my mouth and the steak in stilton was so tender it fell apart."

Cons:

  • "We ate there as well and that was disappointing."
  • "It was a very cheap mass produced pasty with thick heavy pastry and containing just a homogenised mush."
  • "Food was average and cold, not at all worth the price."
  • "However steak and ale pie dish we had was quite bland and too bigger portion for our stomachs."
  • "However, we felt the food was mediocre and overpriced."
  • "The fishcakes were small and bland (and we have small appetites) and generally unexciting, the fish and chips was sad looking - really thick batter with a tiny fillet of cod inside."
  • "The portions were large, but very mass catering like."

Service

Pros:

  • "Friendly, efficient staff, great food and a very decent selection of local ales."
  • "Brilliant friendly staff we turned up late after they had finished cooking hungry with 2 kids and they asked the kitchen and they stayed to cook for us."
  • "Attentive bar staff and waiting staff go the extra mile."
  • "Service was amazing, food and drink top class."
  • "Great service taking into consideration of the busy period."
  • "The bar staff and their service was excellent and above and beyond."
  • "Service was impeccable, down to earth and very friendly."

Cons:

  • "After waiting nearly 30 minutes to get a drink and order our food, we then waited just over 1.5 hours for the food to come."
  • "Owner was extremely rude and unhelpful, which ruined a nice day."
  • "Service is fairly quick but on this particular visit we found one staff member quite unfriendly."
  • "Sadly didn't get round to ordering the food as we were met with a very rude response by the lady behind the bar."
  • "Rude staff and average quality of food."
  • "However the older man who took our order was rude, sarcastic and obnoxious."
  • "We felt like the staff were trying to hurry us along the whole night."

Ambience

Pros:

  • "For those looking for the feeling of a real country pub."
  • "Entertainment is provided by the ducks and chickens who wander randomly around the garden and enjoy a paddle in the stream."
  • "The building looks like it's straight out of the 1800s (in a good way) and the surroundings of Widecome On The Moore really make it feel really special."
  • "Sit outside in the garden and listen to the ducks and other poultry - one of them has a particularly hilarious quack which we found especially amusing."
  • "Lovely old pub, on the heart of the Moor."
  • "The setting is beautiful - old building at the bottom of the valley with a little stream flowing a long the side of the building."
  • "Lovely ambience in the beer garden where chewbacca chicken and its troop roaming around, its cute."

Cons:

  • "Didn't on the whole like the atmosphere or patrons will avoid in future."
  • "Pretty pub but I can't understand why any pub would want to host a hunt let alone the particularly nasty South Devon Hunt."
  • "We were seated next to a noisy family while there were plenty of seats in another room."
  • "If you like your food served in a Zoo then this is the place for you."
  • "The quirky system of reading the menu off blackboards on a crowded corridor was a little bit testing."

Facilities

Pros:

  • "Dog friendly and plenty of outdoor tables to enjoy your meal al-fresco with your canine friend."
  • "Not much seating indoors, so book a table in the winter. Don't be put off in the summer by rain - the sun shades on the outside tables are both large and waterproof."
  • "There is a car park across the road, which is free for a change."
  • "There's a large car park and camp site close by."
  • "Lovely pub with a big garden."
  • "A real taste of a local pub where you can takeaway the local beer and cider in a 4 pint milk carton!"
  • "Great little cottage with everything you need and next to the picture perfect inn with fantastic food!"
