Beaches and Coastline

Pros:

  • "Stunning sandy coast with dunes and rock pools."
  • "There are miles of unspoiled beach, which away from tourist hot spots, are often empty of people."
  • "Whatever you want from a coastal holiday, visit, you will find it in Northumberland. Lovely beaches, busy or deserted, perfect for kids and adults alike, most are dog friendly."
  • "Simply beautiful, and such contrasting landscapes along the whole coast, cliffs, rocky shore, beautiful wide sandy beaches."
  • "Vast sandy beaches with very few people."
  • "Beautiful long golden sandy beaches."
  • "Long uncrowded litter free sandy beaches. Wonderful coastal path with stunning views and the skyline peppered with castles."

Cons:

  • "Access to beach via sand dunes, not suitable for prams or wheelchairs."
  • "The coast itself is lovely in an unremittingly bleak way. Endless Scrubby dunes."
  • "The costal route isn't great - hyped up a lot and a bit of an anticlimax as barely see the sea and its just a bit boring to be honest."
  • "Peace and quiet shattered by ignorant, inconsiderate dog owners allowing their dogs to run wild and yap yap yap."
  • "It's a pity that not everyone respects natural beauty and thinks it's appropriate to leave plastic on the beach."
  • "Some areas are quite hard to access and are fenced off."
  • "The spoiler is the huge amount of dog owners who selfishly let their untrained dogs run riot with no regard for other beach users. 2 stars, could do better."

Local Attractions and Activities

Pros:

  • "Northumberland has coastline to rival anywhere in the world in my opinion. Quite breath taking."
  • "Lindisfarne is an important place in our ancient religious history. It is a place of great tranquillity. And healing for the troubled mind and soul."
  • "BBQ with great food from Bamburgh butchers and greengrocers. Swimming in the sea under Bamburgh castle."
  • "Whats not to love one of the best places to be in England beautiful castles all along the length of the coast and brilliant places to visit."
  • "A lovely place to walk plenty of places to take photos."
  • "The coastal path continues over Cullernose Point, whose cliffs are popular nesting sites for fulmar and kittiwake."
  • "An ancient ruined castle. Definitely worth seeing."

Cons:

  • "However coming home we had a nightmare journey. When we got onto the A1 the grass verges were being cut & one lane of the dual carriageway was blocked for miles."
  • "Difficulty is that northumberland coastal path route changed and not resignposted well, especially at berwick end where it now finishes to right of old bridge not at station where os map shows it but staff looked blankly at me when i asked."
  • "Why are there so many dogs. Charge a licence fee."
  • "Its a repulsively hideous area contaminated with radioactive fallout."
  • "Alnmouth is a lovely beach you cant fault it however the parking is dreadful."
  • "Bamburgh castle was disappointing for a dog owner (no dogs not even in the grounds) so no money spent there then."
  • "Holy island... nothing to see apart from a £7.20 walk around the museum and grounds..over-priced mead."

Accommodation and Facilities

Pros:

  • "A good self-catering base is Low Hauxley at the north end of the Bay."
  • "Stayed for 2 nights at Springhill Farm campsite which is a well kept site with good amenities."
  • "Seafields caravan site lovely and clean, lovely caravans, with modem electrical appliances! Three piece suite not so good, not comfy an no cushions but wouldn't stop us from coming again and again."
  • "Free public toilets including disabled in centre of Bamburgh 2 minutes walk from the public car park."
  • "lovely stay in Dunstan Steads in Northumberland. Good walking, the cleanest beach I've ever seen between Dunstan to Embleton."
  • "Great for cycling and walking."
  • "The Northumberland coast is certainly an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty."

Cons:

  • "Parking is very limited so go early if it's a lovely day (parking is free)."
  • "There are toilets on Inner Farne but not Staple Island...Take your own food."
  • "Car parking can be an issue at high season."
  • "Limited parking on side of road (free) at Seahouses."
  • "CL awful. Toilet/shower dirty and although there was just me and my hubby we certainly wouldn't recommend staying with children or dogs as farm machinery drive through the CL at speed and they have 2 dogs a Staffy and Border Collie that roam loose and are not very friendly."
  • "Difficult part with some people letting their dogs off lead everywhere with no recall."
  • "Obviously, it is not meant for exploring on buses, but hopefully, this amenity can be improved for those of us who don't drive."
