Atmosphere and Venue

Pros:

  • "Superb outdoor beer garden, loads of tables and a huge screen showing sports!"
  • "The venue was awesome. Huge screen. Excellent atmosphere."
  • "Really nice traditional pub with wooden panelled walls."
  • "Great pub for a sunny day! The courtyard is very spacious and is great for sitting in with pint watching the football on the big screen they have!"
  • "This is a lovely outdoor as well as indoor venue. Obviously geared up for the festival, the outdoor area is in a lovely setting."
  • "Awesome atmosphere. Came here to watch the womens 2019 world cup on the big screen."
  • "Look no further than The Pear Tree for your beer garden and big screen sports viewing. With a massive sun soaked beer garden and an huge outdoor TV screen, it's a cracking place to enjoy a beer a match of some description."

Cons:

  • "Some of the staff they do have are very slow and not very observant as to who has been waiting longest!"
  • "Too few staff behind the bar making the queue massive, often out of the door."
  • "Too busy during festival and not enough staff."
  • "On their website they said they would be showing the F1 qualifying session, and they kept showing the Euro qualifying match instead even when asked about it."
  • "Went to the Pear tree to watch the France v Argentina game. Great atmosphere, however as this is such a popular place to watch any games, they really need to get staffing sorted."
  • "The place was really busy so the queue to the bar was out the door, maybe an additional outdoor bar for these occasions would help."
  • "Edinburghs go to beer garden. A victim of it's own success I'd avoid at peak times unless you are into crowded sweaty queues snaking past your table."

Service and Staff

Pros:

  • "Great atmosphere. Friendly attentive staff."
  • "Helpful staff doing their best re working with covid and drunk people."
  • "The Pear Tree staff were really friendly and polite."
  • "The stuff was super friendly and professional."
  • "The staff were excellent and this is the norm just now."
  • "Ordering drinks by app was a little strange, but staff were on hand to help when we got stuck!"
  • "Staff are nice and relaxed even when the bar is crazy!"

Cons:

  • "Absolute horrendous service from the dark haired gentleman who was clearing up glasses."
  • "Staff unfortunately were not friendly at all."
  • "One staff member was very miserable and commented on a dog nearby that shouldn’t be in the pub beer garden."
  • "They try to guilt you into paying as you leave."
  • "They've employed some particularly rude staff."
  • "The staff are so ignorant... they are robots who can't think for themselves once they have your money you mean nothing to them."
  • "Staff ok but highly unwelcoming and misanthropic management."

Food and Drinks

Pros:

  • "Good drinks selection, although pretty pricy."
  • "Good selection of drinks and reasonably priced, the food was decent too."
  • "The BBQ is great."
  • "Food is great, beer selection is ok but not spectacular."
  • "The fish and chips is superb. One of the best I’ve had in Edinburgh."
  • "Drinks were lovely, food beautiful."
  • "They specialise in gins which are all really nice."

Cons:

  • "The chicken wings were terrible and the coke tasted like fizzy water."
  • "The burger meat was dry as well."
  • "Lagers should never be served in ale glasses."
  • "Not great beers and take away food in a bag at restaurant prices."
  • "Food is massively overpriced."
  • "The food is nothing special, in fact I would class as very poor, no taste on the burger and the meat was very dense."
  • "We ordered chicken wings with hot sauce only to arrive incredible dry and cold!"

Pricing and Value

Pros:

  • "Although there are cheaper pubs this one is cheap enough."
  • "Nice inexpensive place."
  • "There is a student menu which offers lower prices for those with a student ID which was a great way to save about a pound per drink."

Cons:

  • "Ice creams were a bit overpriced and it was cash only to buy food or drink outside."
  • "Good layout and a nice atmosphere - especially for sporting events - but it is extremely overpriced."
  • "£5.50 for a pint of Guinness is a rip off given what a keg costs."
  • "But a fiver for a pint of Heineken is expensive, even for Edinburgh."
  • "Food was good. We got 2 sharing plates but they were really small portions for the price."
  • "Not particularly cheap either with a limited drinks menu."
  • "The nachos are not worth your money though and neither is the 17 pounds deal including wine."

Booking and Ordering System

Pros:

  • "You had to scan a QR code to order off of their menu in which then would then take only about 10 minutes to get our drinks to us."
  • "Order via app and table service is efficient."
  • "The staff were also very helpful in managing multiple bookings."

Cons:

  • "Had to order through app type thing on phone. Not great."
  • "The booking system only lasts 2 hours so if you are here to watch a game would recommend booking 2 slots in a row so you don't get moved mid-game!"
  • "Everything ordered on the app."
  • "Even though booking a slot and having to order everything through the app is a pain."
  • "Then they've installed the most impractical ordering system known to man."
  • "I wasn't impressed that no waiter service was available."
  • "At 6pm we were given a notice to say our table was reserved at 8pm, which was the main game of the day, after questioning why we were asked to move when we have been here all-day we were pretty much told we have to find another seat in a fully packed pub."
