Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food was oh so interesting and tasty."
  • "Every dish had so much flavour and character."
  • "Food absolutely blew us away!"
  • "Everything tasted so fresh and light not heavy at all."
  • "The food met my expectations of really good gourmet Chinese at fairly reasonable prices and some imaginative dishes that will require another visit to explore."
  • "Every single dish was incredible - not a dud amongst them."
  • "The food itself was creative, traditional and tasty."

Cons:

  • "Not a single dish really blew my mind, which I do expect in a 2 Michelin stars restaurant."
  • "The Mapo tofu and lamb burger were not very exciting for us, neither were the desserts."
  • "However this place did not deliver on the quality of food that I expect from chinese food."
  • "The wagyu beef, har gau with foam, siew mai with cracking pork and goldfish dumplings look divine but was more style over substance I.e. they lacked a depth of flavour."
  • "The xiao long bao is horrid. Skin of all the different types of dumplings are too thick, food is too salty."
  • "Some dim sum dishes are good, but some are Westernized that just doesn’t taste right."
  • "Many of the dishes were heavily fried, mainly and rather tasteless and/or salty."

Service

Pros:

  • "Not only were they professional but made the whole experience fun."
  • "Aside from the amazing food, the staff and the service were immaculate."
  • "Service was excellent, all the staff were super knowledgeable and really friendly."
  • "The service was top-notch, with knowledgeable staff members who were passionate about the menu and provided insightful descriptions of each dish."
  • "Service was personal, wine list was extensive, and food was to die for."
  • "The server was very helpful and knowledgeable, A Wong himself said 'hi' and his wife went around to all the tables to have a chat."
  • "Service was professional and friendly."

Cons:

  • "Worst service I’ve ever had at a two star restaurant."
  • "Staff were struggling at times."
  • "Service attitude is particularly poor."
  • "The service is equally lacklustre."
  • "Service is mediocre, staff don't smile or seem attentive."
  • "The service, whilst a tad aggressive was professional."
  • "The service is mediocre with a good part of the staff not wearing masks."

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "Nice to be able to see the chefs in action."
  • "The restaurant has a nice interior and where we were seated, you could see into the open kitchen area, which gives the restaurant extra character and atmosphere."
  • "Casual and laid back atmosphere."
  • "The atmosphere and music and lighting were perfect."
  • "It was such a lovely environment to be in."
  • "The space is so different from other michelin restaurants that enjoy exposing their avant gardness, it was rather his childhood home, much more modest and true."
  • "We got there a bit early and were seated in the bar downstairs, which was a very nice, quiet environment with delicious drinks."

Cons:

  • "The atmosphere at the bar (where we were sat) was a bit overwhelming as there was constant service traffic, and we were right in front of the entrance door."
  • "We were seated in the conservatory which was not as ambient as inside."
  • "The conservatory area is a little lacking in ambiance."
  • "It was not a pleasant space. Hot and lacking in air."
  • "The restaurant is very small, there is a nice vibe inside the restaurant but the outside seating area where we were was quite plain and boring to look at."
  • "The table next door ruined the entire experience."
  • "Dessert in the Forbidden City. What amounts to a badly decorated, badly lit freezing cold dungeon."

Value

Pros:

  • "Very good value for money and flavours not super overwhelming."
  • "The al a carte menu is extensive and very reasonably priced."
  • "The bill came to just over £50/ person - great value for the amount ordered."
  • "Is it expensive, yes quite, but do yourself a favour and forget the price it only tells you if you can afford it, not what its worth."
  • "Highly recommended. It is expensive but that's Michelin star quality hence the price is justified."
  • "Pre booked the tasting menu at £90 a head which was outstanding as it took you on a tour of all the various flavours across China."
  • "Absolutely amazing food ambiance and service!"

Cons:

  • "The experience itself was unremarkable and terribly overpriced."
  • "It’s a special occasion place for sure … pricey but considering the quality of the food and that it is 2 ⭐️ ⭐️ … kinda makes sense."
  • "£200 a head is heavy, though, even for 24 dishes."
  • "£600 is rather pricey."
  • "Although the food was tasty, it was way overpriced."
  • "A Wong is also horrifyingly expensive for what it is."
  • "Extremely overpriced - the set menu, whilst well executed, is portioned so miserly it is offensive."
