Architecture and Design

Pros:

  • "A stunning showcase of the classic art deco style of the 1920-30s and of freemasonry."
  • "The Freemasons Hall is magnificent with architecture and craftsmanship to match, all of which made this hall the perfect setting for such a musical experience."
  • "Terrific atmosphere when full, but art deco architecture still very impressive if empty."
  • "Star-studded ceilings, gold everywhere, symbolism everywhere from floor to ceiling - it's just breathtaking."
  • "One of London's finest Art Deco buildings."
  • "beautiful art deco building with amazing architecture."
  • "The architecture and work put in it are simply incredible."

Cons:

  • "Beautiful architecture but the big downside is that you can't see any daylight from this cavernous internal space."
  • "Spacious building, the feel of a church but with Art Deco taste... not breathtaking and in need of some minor maintenance works."
  • "Wonderful temple slightly spoiled by the clumsy installation of some lights with cabling hanging down."

Visitor Experience

Pros:

  • "The new bar/cafe is excellent. It allows patrons and visitors to enjoy quality refreshments at sensible prices whilst sampling the incredible architecture on view."
  • "The museum is excellent and if possible, I would recommend that you join a tour."
  • "Strongly recommend. Definitely will come back. A visit gave me more information about the history of the USA, for example."
  • "An inspiring experience full of history and grandeur."
  • "Well worth a visit and look out for regular public open concert performances and events held in the Grand Temple."
  • "All staff were friendly and welcoming, so don't be put off a visit."
  • "The museum is free and gives you access to the grand building which is still in operation with many lodges and meets taking place."

Cons:

  • "A horrible experience. Google Maps said the place closed at 7:30 pm, but when he arrived (6:30 pm) it was already closed."
  • "Interesting but the 'tour' was very poor. It was very static moving from one display to another with no humour, no expression in the guides monotone and heavy accented voice."
  • "Only downside, cafe food was very limited by 1.45pm on a midweek day.... all fridges were totally empty and only a few cakes and sweets available."
  • "Now, we weren't able to go into the Grand Temple Room because they were setting up for an event."
  • "I found the quasi religious and mythological aura rather unsettling."
  • "Also found the staff at reception to be very condescending upon being questioned about directions etc."
  • "The truth was that it was a disappointment, I expected the English freemasons to be supportive people."

Accessibility and Amenities

Pros:

  • "Fantastic building and available to view for non Mason's.. Parking where you can in Central London or better go to Covent Garden or Holborn by Tube."
  • "Free entry. Nice shop. Quite quiet and the staff were friendly."
  • "It is free to enter, though there is an audio guide available for £5."
  • "Fantastic location, easy to get to between Holborn and Covent Garden stations."
  • "Open to non Masons, well worth a visit."
  • "Good toilet facilities (which is always important)."
  • "Clean toilets and lively café."

Cons:
