Guided Tours

Pros:

  • "A great visit with my 5yr old and 2yr old. Graham our guide was both entertaining and informative."
  • "our guide had worked in that very mine for many, many years."
  • "The guide Pete was an ex miner and very knowledgeable."
  • "Our tour guide Graham was excellent. Great and sad to hear about the stories from the mines."
  • "Absolutely amazing! Taking the tour with Tony was definitely a highlight of our trip to Wales, he's a genuine miner and is hilarious."
  • "The tour guide was so interesting and he told us about his own experiences of working in the mine."
  • "Brilliantly maintained. A real piece of history, worth visiting because it is an eye opener and it makes you look at your own job with different eyes."

Cons:

  • "Without the tour, we felt it was very underwhelming. Not much to see, small exhibition."
  • "Disappointed that none of the buildings were accessible unless you went on a tour, which were only every two hours & lasted an hour and a half."
  • "No tour for us as we're camping in the area and have a dog with us (no dogs allowed) so it was a flying visit for us."
  • "It's ok but not great, you don't go down the actual mine shaft as it's flooded (it's fake) and the tram ride at the end could be updated, tour guide was great."
  • "Took the grandchildren to the santa toy workshop. Not as enchanting as it could be tour pretty basic and unexciting."
  • "Our guide was totally boring and uninspiring."
  • "Today we saw Santa. What a disappointment, there were no gasps, absolutely no magic."

Facilities & Amenities

Pros:

  • "A family ticket (2 adults 2 children) cost £20.25, ample free parking, café, children's soft play."
  • "good parking and a great onsite cafe."
  • "There is a cafe with a good choice of food and drinks a old style shop with a craft workshop and a gift shop, restrooms, disabled access and parking."
  • "Facilities are well maintained and toilets are clean."
  • "they have plenty of toilets, and baby changing facilities which are extremely clean"
  • "Cafe was really nice, food good and fairly priced."
  • "Well appointed shop with local produce and assorted gifts."

Cons:

  • "The floor in the mine is a bit bumpy so would phone ahead to ask about whether they thought suitable for wheel chair or buggy access."
  • "Only criticism was the gift shop. Not much to do with the mine there and what was there was very expensive for what it was."
  • "We were the last tour of the day and so before our tour I checked with the cafe to see if we could have a drink there after the tour, they said no problem but they close at 430. We finished the tour at 4 and went to the cafe and one woman there was so rude and basically tried to stop us going in, saying they were closing in 15 mins."
  • "The only downside to the afternoon was the fact that the cafe was closed. Run independently, but it was a Bank Holiday and in my opinion should be open if the Rhondda Heritage Park is open."
  • "We didn't get to experience the cafe as it closed at 2:30 pm so keep that in mind if you're going for the 1 pm tour."
  • "The tea shop was shut because it was Easter Monday although the rest of the site was open."
  • "The cafe was a rip off and cost me and my wife 10 pounds for four biscuits for our.two.children which I think is robbing the public."

Value for Money

Pros:

  • "It's nice to go somewhere where they don't charge for everything. They had rides, pumpkin picking, and free activities included in the price."
  • "Tours costs about £7 per adult and the exhibition is free of charge."
  • "You have to pay for child entry into the park but at around £2 (no time limit) it's definitely worth it."
  • "We were surprised that our visit otherwise was completely free other than paying one pound for our grandchild to play in the park area."
  • "I was amazed how cheap the tour was as well and kept in our family bubble. It was worth so much more."
  • "This is a free attraction you only pay for the tour which is worth the charge."
  • "Also has a lovely little cafe that sells coffee, cakes and sandwiches - a little pricey compared to other cafes in the area but cheaper than chain coffeeshops like Starbucks or Costa."

Cons:

  • "On the minus side there were only 5 disabled parking spaces."
  • "Overall a lovely experience but I did think it was a little pricey for the chocolate making (£7.50 for 2 chocolate decorations)."
  • "but to do the tour it costs £9.95 per adult but the car park is FREE, for us if you want the best experience of a coal mine then you should visit Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon as we thought this was more informative."
  • "disappointed that shops in foyer area had been closed down not sure if this was for a refurb. Website a little misleading"
  • "The 'ride' at the end was rather disappointing though. The shots on the website imply it's one of those simulator type rides but although it looked the part, it was static, with a wrap-around cine screen."
  • "The Christmas gifts off Santa for our children looked like they had been purchased from the pound shop."
  • "Unfortunately we went over at the wrong time, they had a christmas day on for the kids."

Staff & Customer Service

Pros:

  • "Staff are always friendly and helpful, even when putting up Christmas decorations!"
  • "Staff are absolutely fantastic and go out of their way to help."
  • "Sian, on reception was very helpful."
  • "The whole experience was magical and every member of staff were really helpful and friendly."
  • "All the staff are very welcoming and friendly, especially Josie on reception."
  • "An excellent example of good customer service. Excellent food at a reasonable price."
  • "Ladies on the front desk were friendly and helpful."

Cons:

  • "We had a drink and a cake and at 420 they said they were shut and we had to leave. It’s such a shame as it really ruined the end of a lovely experience. The customer service in the cafe was poor."
  • "One minor complaint, the guide tho very happy and cheerful at one point was asked if he would return to mining if the industry was revived tomorrow... at the end of the tour we were passively aggressively denied a handshake."
  • "Today we saw Santa. What a disappointment, there were no gasps, absolutely no magic."
  • "shocking food, dirty kitchen, waited ages for food and was disappointed with what was on my plate"
  • "The cafe was a rip off and cost me and my wife 10 pounds for four biscuits for our.two.children which I think is robbing the public."
