Food Quality

Pros:

  • "One of the best pies we have ever eaten. The chicken, ham and leek pie was stuffed with meat and had the most buttery pastry."
  • "Back again for evening meal. Once again our food was wonderful. This place can’t be beaten for the price."
  • "Probably the best lunch I have ever had. The food was delicious and the price exceptional for the quality provided in all departments."
  • "It's a very pretty, old pub with multiple rooms and a fireplace. The highlight though is the food. Not only is the menu varied, but pretty much everything that came out was absolutely excellent."
  • "Wow, what a find. A beautiful Proper country inn. The food was first class. I had the steak and Stilton pie. The best pie I have ever had."
  • "Excellent food, great swift service. Allocated car park."
  • "Fantastic lunchtime meal. Had the famous Steak and Stilton Pie with a couple of pints."
  • "Food is all home made and the staff are great! We were recommended the chicken, ham & leek pie and the steak & stilton pie. Both were delicious and a hefty portion size!"

Cons:

  • "The only food item I wouldn't recommend is the cheese and pickle baguette; it was more a large, (slightly dry) roll than a baguette."
  • "Banana in the banoffee pie was hard and under ripe and cauliflower cheese was a bit bland."
  • "Meal was average, chef needs to improve skills when saute potatoes are on menu. Several of the saute potatoes were not properly cooked."
  • "It was okay but nothing special like I'd thought it be from reading other reviews."
  • "Not a very good first impression I must admit...Food was nice and is the only reason I’ve given stars at all."
  • "Pub is full of character and food appeared to be good for others but a chef should know what Greek salad components are."
  • "Disappointing must have gone on the chef's week off. Normally a quite good pub but shows that they are like the rest of us and just have bad days."

Service

Pros:

  • "Attentive staff and great quick service. Very dog friendly and enough space for dogs to lie down."
  • "Friendly accommodating staff. Would definitely go back if ever again in the area."
  • "The staff were lovely, charming very helpful."
  • "All needs were catered to quickly. Will definitely come back."
  • "The service was excellent, food delicious, friendly staff working."
  • "We had the best I have ever eaten steak and Stilton pie and fresh veg and sauté potatoes...All homemade on site, so much meat and enormous portions."
  • "Lovely staff and great food. Would definitely recommend if you're staying nearby."
  • "What can I say? Superb food (and plenty of it - make sure you're hungry when you visit) Serving staff are an absolute treat."

Cons:

  • "Have always had a great time here. However, on this occasion, the welcome was abrupt."
  • "Not a very good first impression I must admit... the blonde lady behind the bar who wasn’t friendly at all."
  • "I'm not sure how to approach this review because it was all a bit strange....firstly I would like to say that the food is amazing. Come here for the food, not the service."
  • "When asked why she thought that this was acceptable she replied that she was only allowed to offer one sachet because if we didn't use the second it would have to be thrown away."
  • "Very disappointed by the 'welcome' we received after a long walk."
  • "Yep part of it was our fault. But just because your customer has a northern accent doesnt mean you can rudely treat them like an inconvenience and a tourist."
  • "Went for a drink in the evening and then for Sunday lunch next day. Servers were lovely but 2 of the bar staff were rude as if it is a nuisance to have customers."

Atmosphere and Location

Pros:

  • "It's a very pretty, old pub with multiple rooms and a fireplace."
  • "The Inn is very interesting reflecting the local mining and farming heritage. Highly recommended."
  • "An honestly delightful village pub with heaps of character. The atmosphere is lovely."
  • "Beautiful place, very nice historic design of the pub."
  • "Nice pub serving good food in a lovely location. Pleasant atmosphere."
  • "A beautiful old pub with good food, great ales and a very friendly staff."
  • "Beautiful atmospheric 15 century pub. Excellent food but good value, pleasant efficient service, lovely open fire and dog friendly."
  • "Excellent menu and food. Delightful Olde world coaching Inn in a small rural village on the western edge of Dartmoor."

Cons:

  • "Also my friend went to the loo and came back saying that he was met with the most disgusting smell."
  • "Not a very good first impression I must admit... we couldn’t park anywhere near the pub so we had to drive back up the horrible, narrow lane to park somewhere else."
  • "Some intermittent of sign post to the pub narrow roads so you may question your going the right way."
  • "Great beer, great food but if you're walking there be aware the farm next door has a pack of aggressive to other dog Collies."
  • "Full of character, cosy, excellent menu choice, chef's cooking awesome, meals well presented, warm plates, an enjoyable experience for quality, prices too."
  • "We came here for lunch on 26/5/19 the food and service was second to none very polite, not rushed, even though they were fully booked, recommended to book prior to visit"
