Food Quality

Pros:

  • "Fantastic food and drinks, a super friendly team, and an amazingly unique atmosphere that all history buffs will adore."
  • "Amazing food!...meat pie with lots of meats...fresh food ...home made pastry and even icecream...love it."
  • "I had the pork belly, and banoffee pie. Pork belly was cooked to perfection with nice crunchy crackling on top."
  • "Absolutely lovely food. Chicken liver parfait exceptional and all such great value too."
  • "Food was excellent, mid price range and the portions were huge."
  • "Great tasting food. We ordered two Sunday roasts and they arrived in good time, plenty of meat and vegetables, and most importantly they were hot!"
  • "The food was delicious. I had the gammon, egg and chips with peas and my other half had the steak and stilton pie."

Cons:

  • "No care for whom had been waiting longest at the bar or there was no who's next just whoever was closest got served."
  • "Also had to sit out on wet seats after the rain this week as the covered seating area was just full of smokers."
  • "The marmite butter was still frozen. Taken back to the kitchen. Second attempt. Still frozen!"
  • "I had a seafood dish for £17 which tasted very bland and unimaginative, basically seafood swimming in plain tomato sauce, no seasoning or flavour beyond acidic tomato."
  • "But recently the service has been awful and the food has been non existent."
  • "The kidney pie pastry was rock solid and burnt, potentially overcooked by mistake."
  • "The expensive vegan burger was truly awful tasting I'm sorry to say."

Service

Pros:

  • "The staff friendly and attentive."
  • "The staff are always friendly and service is great."
  • "The staff were very welcoming especially the young gentleman who looked after us in the beginning with the mix up with our booking."
  • "Service was top notch and very attentive."
  • "The staff were really friendly and the food great."
  • "Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Great service and delicious food."
  • "The staff were very attentive but not in your face, very friendly and welcoming."

Cons:

  • "All the tables inside were reserved (but half of them still empty and by the time we left almost all of them) and we agreed to be seated outside. Despite the cold rainy weather we hoped for a nice hot tea and good food. The cushions on the chairs were wet and we have waited 20 minutes for a tea that never appeared."
  • "Can get very busy and limit your table time so would suggest taking the 2nd sitting."
  • "Had a very nice meal for a group of family we asked for the bill which came to £132 we gave the waitress £150 cash she said do you want any change we said no that's for you we all thought she was quite rude for not even saying thank you."
  • "Given the pressure pubs are under to attract customers at the moment (due to covid), we were surprised to be so rudely and curtly turned away at a time that the pub was advertised as open."
  • "The service at the bar was so slow we nearly left."
  • "Had to wait half an hour for the bill, which turned out to be totally incorrect with meals and bottles of wine we never ordered."
  • "Appalling treatment by the Manager today, he was clearly having a bad day and decided to take it out on me."

Atmosphere

Pros:

  • "This place is so beautiful. It's got such an atmosphere to it. It's calm and cozy."
  • "The atmosphere was very good. I loved the old building and the whole interior had a very cozy feel."
  • "Best food and atmosphere we had on our trip to visit England."
  • "Beautiful quintessential English pub."
  • "Enjoying dinner by the fireplace is very keeping in line with the character of the Hever Castle and it is the best way to end your visit there."
  • "The atmosphere of the pub was lovely, full and bustling with a really pleasant conservatory and patio outside eating area."
  • "A picturesque pub in a lovely location next to a church & of course, Hever Castle. Very historical inside with great portraits of former monarchs."

Cons:

  • "Instead of sitting in the warm sun we were instead invited to sit under cover and freeze our socks off in the shade."
  • "On sitting down in the garden (planning to get our own drinks from the bar) a waitress rushed out to inform us that the garden was closed."
  • "But I don’t think they should be allowed in the restaurant sit in the garden maybe or the outer part of the restaurant certainly not on chairs or eating out of the plates / bowls it was dreadful totally ruined our visit."
  • "We were seated outside which didn't feel very historic."
  • "It's such a pity for a cozy and nice place like this pub to lose their customers because of such a poor customer service and bad management."
  • "Really great atmosphere but busy at bar, long wait to be served."
  • "But recently the service has been awful."

Location

Pros:

  • "Good location with fantastic views, good drinks menu, toilets are clean."
  • "A wonderful, local pub that is friendly and inviting to strangers."
  • "This is a very handy pub in walking distance from the castle."
  • "The pub is oak-beamed, with dark panelling, wooden floors and large fireplaces. At the back is a big garden with a lovely pond."
  • "A picturesque pub in a lovely location next to a church & of course, Hever Castle. Very historical inside with great portraits of former monarchs."
  • "Within easy access to Hever Castle (1min walk), with parking and a big outdoor sitting area."
  • "Lovely country pub in the beautiful village of Hever ~ Been here many times whilst visiting Hever Castle which is across the road."

Cons:

  • "Parking limited in car park opposite on busy days but believe there is an overflow a little further down."
  • "Worth visiting if you're staying at Hever, although access isn't great from castle (you have to walk on the road) and it closes quite early (8pm on the website)."
  • "Monday 2 May, I cannot believe that on a Bank Holiday Monday in a key tourist village this pub is closed."
  • "Dropping a star because they could do with working on communication - I had to phone up 4 or 5 separate times before I could book a table."
  • "It's quite expensive - on average about £18 for a main which brings it down a star."
  • "It was quite busy but the service was very good."
  • "Busy and no space in garden."
