Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food was excellent and the service was very good."
  • "The crab and crayfish croquette starter was divine, as was the chicken supreme for a main."
  • "The treacle bread is out of this world! Could have eaten that for starter, main and dessert!!"
  • "The food was delicious every single mouthful."
  • "Compliments to the chef for an amazing new Venison starter they offered which wasn't on menu yet."
  • "Both the mackerel pate and the rabbit suet pudding were modern twists on classic British food - with beautiful flavour combinations."
  • "The slow cooked lamb is beautifully tender, rich and unctuous. It is perfect."

Cons:

  • "The beef was so stringy (sinews?) it was quite difficult to cut."
  • "I was disappointed that there wasn't more steak options as I'm partial to a fillet steak."
  • "The Flat Iron Steak wasn't. It was served medium rare, but the meat was brown throughout."
  • "The worst sunday roast iv ever had, only good starter was mushrooms on toast, chicken liver almost made me throw up."
  • "The food was very good apart from two birthday ladies who sirloin was fatty chewy and inedible."
  • "Two of us had the pork main and the mash and gravy were hugely over salted."
  • "Unfortunately though we were let down by our mains - my wife and I shared the lamb shoulder for 2 but both found it very bland and it didn’t taste of much at all."

Service

Pros:

  • "Great Food and Service, our room was in recently refurbished annex. Very comfortable and a good standard."
  • "The staff are first rate, very helpful and efficient."
  • "Staff were friendly and all Covid measures taken so we felt perfectly safe."
  • "Service was very professional, very friendly and our server was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine."
  • "What really stood out was the service. Attentive but not obtrusive."
  • "Couldn't fault a single thing with the service, food, atmosphere and facilities."
  • "The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming."

Cons:

  • "Service was a little slow and we were made to wait over 40min for our food."
  • "We felt the two staff waiting on were over-stretched which was unfortunate."
  • "Service was a touch stretched in places but very professional."
  • "When we checked out the staff didn't ask about my stay or say goodbye."
  • "The restaurant could do with more windows that open though - the kitchen extractor fan seemed to be broken on the day we visited and the dining room really smelt."
  • "However we were disappointed when two members of staff walked into our room unannounced whilst we were half dressed (no apology either...)."
  • "Sadly the service wasn't good, the food and drinks took far too long to arrive."

Atmosphere & Decor

Pros:

  • "The restaurant itself is very nice and a lot of thought has gone into the place."
  • "Lovely rooms, the attic room was a treat. Very central - only a few minutes walk to the centre of the city."
  • "The ambiance is amazing: they have lit candles all the way down, and a big, antique mirror in the back of the room."
  • "Love the different spaces with different ambients from the open front of main restaurant to the more secluded garden room... they also have beautiful outside area."
  • "The building itself is steeped in history - the lovely interior has beamed ceilings, wooden floors and nooks-and-crannies."
  • "Resturant itself is a lovely setting, upmarket gastro pub decor."
  • "The ambience is nice with good interior and music."

Cons:

  • "Looks a bit dowdy from the outside."
  • "The location just off a roundabout is nothing to shout about, but once inside, you'd never know!"
  • "Garden needs some attention as a bit overgrown and few weeds about."
  • "The place was noisy in the night so you do need to use the ear plug."
  • "Just a shame it's on a less than glamorous stretch of road (don't let that put you off!)."
  • "The room was very noisy due to the road outside (ear plugs provided on side tables....)."
  • "However, the headroom is really low, anyone who is more 5ft 10 will have the risk of hitting the head on the roof beam."

Value

Pros:

  • "So reasonably priced, it included the drinks £30/£40 pp."
  • "Portion sizes are good for 'finer dining' and good value for money."
  • "Good value for money if you're having the 2 (£16) or 3 (£20) course set menu."
  • "Prices for this quality were very reasonable."
  • "Prices were very reasonable for the quality of food - can't wait to come back on our next visit."

Cons:

  • "Overall it was cute but not great value for money."
  • "Given the cost it was a little disappointing."
  • "The only downside is that it is a bit expensive."
  • "At this price point (which I think is fairly priced), we were let down."
