Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food is amazing, it can’t be argued. The fish courses were fresh & tasty, the roasts very well proportioned with good gravy."
  • "The properly cooked food was very nice."
  • "The burger and duck chips was absolutely amazing, definitely one of the best burgers I have ever had."
  • "The food delicious."
  • "However the really impressive quality is the food, which my teen and child deemed as 'best meal of the holiday'."
  • "The food was amazing, so tasty."
  • "All the meals went down well. Food was well cooked and portion sizes were generous."

Cons:

  • "The cheapest meals are about £14, and not that good."
  • "Starter tasty sausage meat but lacking in the black pudding, main not what I expected, found a half of a roasted garlic bulb in the bottom of the fish pie."
  • "The service is sadly lacking, the food is sub par and overpriced."
  • "Breakfast lovely but extortionate."
  • "The sticky toffee puddings were questionable.. almost cold."
  • "Unfortunately the last time the two steaks ordered tasted off like with an acidic flavour."
  • "The food however was good, questionably expensive for what it was..some of the roasts were not particularly hot."

Service

Pros:

  • "Service was really polite, friendly and efficient, food was served in good time even though the place was busy."
  • "The staff were polite, well organised and efficient."
  • "Very friendly and accommodating staff."
  • "Very friendly staff and clearly popular with locals."
  • "Host were very polite and friendly."

  • "Staff and service were very friendly and efficient."

Cons:

  • "When we asked at just before 10pm, if we could get another drink, we were told they were closing as we were the only 2 in."
  • "Waited 20 mins for any drinks to arrive at the table."
  • "Visited this evening and had a mixed time. Was shown to our table and then asked for a menu that never arrived."
  • "Service was mixed - we waited ages for our drinks & had to chase for the extra item we ordered but felt a little rushed through our actual meal."
  • "We were told (after being ignored by the barman wearing reading glasses) that he couldn't find our reservation."
  • "Lots of staff just walked past us, no offer to seat us, and were served after people who arrived after us."
  • "We had to ask on separate occasions for menus, drinks, desert menus & the bill."

Ambience & Location

Pros:

  • "Joined by my parents we sat safely outside in some beautiful decorated shelter, with a heater and blankets if we needed."
  • "Lovely sitting in the courtyard in the sun surrounded by blooming flowers."
  • "Went in for a cheeky half a Hooky and were won over by the relaxed atmosphere and warm ambience."
  • "Really nice atmosphere and great staff - nothing too much bother for Robbie."
  • "Magic canal."
  • "As you walk into the bright courtyard you are surrounded by the authenticity and unique stamp of this place."
  • "A lovely olde world pub, a wonderful restaurant with a beautiful outside seating area."

Cons:

  • "Overall we found this hotel unsatisfactory and we would not recommend it as somewhere to stay."
  • "It's a very nice pub, but at £6.15 for a pint of the cheaper beer and a half of Stowford press, it's the most expensive pub we've yet been to on our travels round the country by boat."
  • "Closed for meals on Sunday evening even for residents, closed all day Wednesday and no cooked breakfast until 10am on any day."
  • "Stains on linen, door to bathroom broken."
  • "Our accommodation here was hugely disappointing, awful damp problem with mould up the walls leaving the room stinking."
  • "Young kids sat on the bar stools and teenagers making openly disparaging remarks about other customers, made for a less than enjoyable evening."
  • "A family who arrived took it upon themselves to close the curtains in the room and consequently we, and other diners, were deprived of lovely sunlight and pretty much had to eat by candle light."

Value

Pros:

  • "The regular menu is also exceptional and you will enjoy the well prepared local produce."
  • "Not average pub food and price tag reflects this but in my opinion worth every penny."
  • "The portions were huge and value was through the roof considering how incredible the food was."
  • "The lunch we had was great and reasonably priced."
  • "For a gastropub, the prices won't break the bank either."
  • "Food was very good, gluten free catered for, and excellent value for money."
  • "The draught beer was good and reasonably priced in a lovely old building."

Cons:

  • "Wouldn’t hurt to put your opening hours on Google Maps, especially considering you’re out in the countryside."
  • "It took almost an hour to be seated regardless of having booked a table, once ordered the food took another hour."
  • "Used to be our favorite place to eat but standards have gone down."
  • "£4.50 a pint for Carlsberg?"
  • "The menu is very over priced and whilst the food maybe good quality, almost £30 for a steak is way over the top for a canalside pub."
  • "The food however was good, questionably expensive for what it was."
  • "Unfortunately the last time the two steaks ordered tasted off like with an acidic flavour."
