Pastry Quality
Pros:
"The pastries were incredible! I went on a Sunday morning and the place was full with a queue to enter."
"The pastries are served warm and super fresh."
"Best pastries in town. If you’re around on the weekend- definitely try the special- whatever it is because it’s always great."
"The pan au chocolat is superior."
"The maple bacon pastry and a chai latte and I loved both."
"Deliciously flakey pastries! Tried their pain aux chocolate (massive), almond croissant, and current weekend special - black forest gateau."
"Please do yourself a favor and get their maple & bacon pastry."
"Probably one of the best bakeries I have been to. The croissant are as good as any I have had in France."
Cons:
"The coffee was delicious but I was surprised to find the highly lauded Viennoisserie a bit tough and disappointing."
"I give 4 stars instead of 5 just because my croissant was too dry for my liking."
"Marmite pastry was wonderful, cardamom bun not my favourite."
"I’m very sad to say that but unfortunately the almond croissant is overrated! I guess I expected much more from Popham but i was left disappointed."
"The pastries are not for me. We have tried most of them (my boyfriend is a fan) but I find the flavours too much; too sickly sweet or too bitter, and the pastry without exception has been burnt."
"Great pastries but the bread lost its quality over time. I used to buy my bread here on a regular basis and recommended it to others but this is now the third time that I receive a bread full of wholes like this."
"Tho expensive, Pophams used to make the best pastries in Islington. Irrespective of price, it was luxurious n unctuous. Lately however, since the price increase and I would suspect cost cutting, it is no longer so."
"This was my third time to buy an almond croissant from Pophams and I have decided not to buy from them anymore. 2 out of 3 times of my purchase I could tell my croissant was from the day before and this time it was burnt."
Coffee Quality
Pros:
"The matcha latte was also very good."
"I really enjoyed the filter coffee as well."
"Recently upgraded their coffee game so deffo recommend getting a cup:)"
"The coffee was delicious but I was surprised to find the highly lauded Viennoisserie a bit tough and disappointing."
"Oh and unexpectedly, the coffee was excellent too! High marks on both their cortado and flat white."
"My favorite coffee spot in Angel (and being from Melbourne, my palette has gotten very used to world class coffee)!"
"Lovely coffee too. It's a quiet and comfortable coffee away from the busy Islington town."
"Pastries to die for and excellent coffee to compliment."
Cons:
"coffee was ok, nothing to speak highly of but the pastries were the real highlight."
"While we ordered an extra shot oat latte hoping for a strong kick to start my day, unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations."
"We ordered Americanos which were fine. The coffee was more acidic in taste, which isn't my favorite."
"I recently ordered a cappuccino at this coffee shop, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired."
"The cappuccino I received had a sour taste, which was likely the result of the shot being poured too quickly, resulting in an overly acidic coffee."
"Tho expensive, Pophams used to make the best pastries in Islington. Irrespective of price, it was luxurious n unctuous. Lately however, since the price increase and I would suspect cost cutting, it is no longer so."
"The set up of this store is not very appealing to sit down and just enjoy a cup of coffee - complete outdoor seating, so fighting with pigeons, the next store is having loud building work done inside and then the baristas yell very loudly every few minutes to identify customers."
"Popular local bakery, with a speciality of bacon and maple syrup swirls. However, the pains au chocolat are huge and as a result you can't get the chocolate hit in every bite - there's a reason that they are usually the size they are. Also, the cappuccino needs to be more froth than liquid - it shouldn't be a latte."
Service and Ambiance
Pros:
"Service is friendly and quick."
"Beautiful interior, lots of seating, friendly service and most importantly delicious pastries!"
"So grateful that i have this gem in my neighbourhood! the staff is very friendly."
"Staff is always lovely. Also like browsing their home ware store."
"The decor is very pleasing with soothing colors and minimalist design."
"The indoor decoration and the stone utensils are beautiful."
"Friendly staff. Amazing service. Breads and pastries are so yummy."
"Love this spot, beautiful in the sun with a few tables and the cute church and courtyard across the road."
Cons:
"I visited on a Saturday afternoon and while it was busy the service was great and the pastry I had was insanely delicious."
"The coffee was delicious but I was surprised to find the highly lauded Viennoisserie a bit tough and disappointing."
"To make matters worse, despite visiting during a relatively quiet period, the wait time was longer than expected."
"Considering the issues with the coffee quality and the slower service, I have reservations about returning to this coffee shop anytime soon."
"Outstanding pastries and coffee. Staff are highly skilled and available."
"Service could be better. I ordered a latte and a pastry for dining in and 2 other pastries to takeaway. I sat down and shortly after my items were sent to me as a takeaway."
"I live on the other side of London but had visited the original Pophams tiny bakery and have not since or before had a better pastry in London, therefore managed to persuade a friend to accompany me on the two hour round journey."
"The set up of this store is not very appealing to sit down and just enjoy a cup of coffee - complete outdoor seating, so fighting with pigeons, the next store is having loud building work done inside and then the baristas yell very loudly every few minutes to identify customers."
