Antique Selection

Pros:

  • "I simply love this place there's so many shops, huts etc to look around and all filled with something to suit all tastes from decorative China, old war memorabilia, furniture of all kinds, jewellery and everything else in between."
  • "More old stuff in that village than you can imagine."
  • "Great mix of stuff, some real treasures I would imagine."
  • "A vast area with many antique traders. Jewelry, bottles, furniture, paintings, memorabilia, teapots.... you name it, you will find it!"
  • "Huge selection of items from genuine antiques, retro, vintage and collectables and prices to suit all budgets."
  • "Quite a collector's paradise, where one can spend quite a good few hours looking through all the wares on offer."
  • "You can find anything from jewellery to furniture, clocks to vintage clothing, crockery to bakelite telephones."

Cons:

  • "Everything is well over priced."
  • "It's a shame some of the items seem a little lacking in quality."
  • "A lot of generic and boring antiques that I would never buy, and very little interesting stuff."
  • "This appears to be a collection of junk shops."
  • "The word 'antique' is stretching it in many cases but there's loads of vintage and retro goods for sale."
  • "It just seems sellers are just filling cabinets with anything, but real collectables or antiques sad in the early 2000s used to be brilliant."
  • "What a disappointment...unless you are looking for repro, new, shabby chic, bohemian craft items or 'general salvage'...there's next to no real quality antiques on the whole site..."

Facilities & Accessibility

Pros:

  • "There is also a few tea rooms spread out over the site including a pub as well."
  • "Top floor of big building is a lovely Tea room that's very clean and the food is well worth the price and it's reasonable."
  • "Good places for food and drink and ample parking facilities."
  • "There are a couple of cafes, both offer sandwiches, salads, great plough man lunches, cakes, cream teas, etc, etc.. there are also a couple of pubs offering great food too - The Barge Inn is very good and reasonably priced."
  • "Free parking that's a good thing."
  • "Ample parking, two lots of toilets and easy access for wheelchairs."
  • "Easily accessed by train and only 5 minutes walk from the train station."

Cons:

  • "Great place, although not accessible to those with mobility issues."
  • "Also the tea room is on the top floor and they don't put any signs out informing you when its closed, which leads to a frustrating climb up three flights, for nothing."
  • "This place has lots of antique places run by different people and all charge vary different prices. Not very disabled friendly as no space inside the shops for wheelchairs or scooters."
  • "The big building does seem to have access only by steep staircase to the upper levels."
  • "Main issue though is that it has very bad accessibility for pushchairs and wheelchairs."
  • "All shops were a short distance apart and stony paths too. No lifts only stairs!"
  • "Went there Monday was not very busy, Not many antiques looked like house clearance items, Had elderly people with me and they have no lifts in the mill also Café on top floor was closed on Mondays."

Atmosphere & Experience

Pros:

  • "This place, in my view, is more of a destination for a good day out, as opposed to antique hunting."
  • "It's a lovely place to wander around - lots of interesting things to see (and buy - hard to resist)."
  • "The area is so beautiful and lots of antiques and garden ornaments."
  • "Such a lovely community atmosphere from all the sellers and a great 1950s styled restaurant where you can get a great cup of coffee."
  • "Fantastic setting by a river."
  • "Absolutely brilliant antique centre ...you could spend all day here."
  • "Battlesbridge is a quirky place where you will find a lot of diverse things."

Cons:

  • "Even the view of the river was very unkempt. It could be so much more!"
  • "Used to love going here and spending a good couple of hours mooching around. However, visited recently and was very disappointed in the lack of sellers/items, it wasn't at all like it used to be!"
  • "I couldn't wait to leave, it was really depressing. Very little on offer and the quality of a lot of things was very disappointing."
  • "It used to be great but recently a lot of the shops have closed down and now it's not as good."
  • "This place has really gone down hill 😪 was busy, but just not quality antiques."
  • "Went there after maybe a twenty year break, and the place looks exactly how it did all those years ago. Same tired looking stuff that I'm sure I saw before."
  • "Place is lovely located, good for spending 1 hour. Very disappointing when it comes to picking antiques between the scrap, replicas and modern stuff being sold."
