Food Quality

Pros:

  • "The food was excellent."
  • "Food is wholesome and the lunchtime menu quite varied. Food is freshly cooked to order."
  • "The food was excellent and prepared freshly, with a well thought out, very low sugar alternative for the diabetic in the group."
  • "Delicious foods, excellent happy friendly service, sandwiches were moist and the combinations so tasty."
  • "Food was exceptional, well presented, unique and quality service."
  • "The sandwiches were plentiful and tasty fillings, lots of cakes and as much tea as you can drink."
  • "Food was excellent, I ordered a full English and it was spot on, the cheesy scrambled eggs were delicious."

Cons:

  • "The portion size was also very small but with loads of bread."
  • "However today I was disappointed with the size, taste and price of a take away fruit scone."
  • "The sandwiches were mostly egg based this time as opposed to salmon etc so it was a lot of money for very basic sandwiches and cake."
  • "Cakes were not home made were very sweet."
  • "The scones were quite hard and fell apart. It equated to almost £6 for two scones with jam and cream which personally I think is a lot."
  • "Your full English advertises 4 rashers of bacon, I got 3 and they were tiny, almost the size of a Kit Kat finger."
  • "Asked for some preferences for one person prior to visit. Completely disregarded special diet still got Egg mayo when asked for egg no butter got some sort of spread."

Service

Pros:

  • "Masie our waitress was friendly, knowledgable, and so helpful."
  • "Couldn't fault, staff fabulous looked after us on every requirement."
  • "Staff were so attentive and willing to advise and guide through the afternoons enjoyment."
  • "All of the staff were very polite, friendly and attentive; we all would definitely visit again."
  • "Staff were very friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble."
  • "Very attentive service."
  • "Wonderful service!! I explained I was in a rush as needed to get to work and they made sure me and my family had all our food together in good time so we didn't have to rush."

Cons:

  • "Told us we'd lose our deposit if we didn't want to go ahead with the afternoon tea for my daughter by possibly one of the rudest waitresses I've ever come across."
  • "A £12 service charge after being spoken to so disgustingly by the waitress was slightly adding insult to injury."
  • "Meals seemed less well presented, almost just quickly thrown together. One was missing one item, (roasted pecan nuts) which when mentioned were brought out in a ramekin, unroasted."
  • "Let down by cheap outdoor furniture and parasols, nasty cutlery, and especially the quality of the horrible cheap plates."
  • "Sadly some of our orders were brought out wrong, same for other diners."
  • "What let it down was having to wait 40 minutes after ordering for our scrambled egg and toast....there was no apology for the lateness."
  • "Wouldn't accommodate disabled booking... Disappointingly they responded that no they would not be kind and accommodate one of their most loyal customers and we were not allowed to book."

Ambiance and Decor

Pros:

  • "What an absolutely delightful venue.... such a charming building."
  • "Beautiful building with an amazing bathroom on the top floor."
  • "Quaint, quirky, great food, lots of nooks and different rooms with different styles, so each visit is unique."
  • "The venue has personality and interesting decor."
  • "The decor and ambience were amazing."
  • "Decor is very cosy."
  • "The building looks amazing from the outside and the decor inside is beautiful."

Cons:

  • "The seating area upstairs is quite small and a little cramped. Seating is quite cramped too. It is reached by quite steep and narrow stairs."
  • "Tea room was a bit cramped but there was seating outside."
  • "Unfortunately a bit chilly in the gondola and a tight squeeze for 7 of us."
  • "The only comment I would make is that the last time we sat outside and the area was pretty untidy."
  • "A chandelier light is for me at eye level. I was not alone in hitting it with my head, so taking character a little too far perhaps?"
  • "The tea room was a lot smaller than I thought it would be."
  • "We were put on the top floor (2 flights of stairs with 4 children was taxing)."

Value

Pros:

  • "Walk in and you are greeted with a smile, the food and drink comes out efficiently, the food and drink is brilliant, the price is right."
  • "All this and the price was half that if not even less than you would pay elsewhere."
  • "Very reasonably priced."
  • "The afternoon teas are exceptional value for money and the lunch menu equally so, with large portions."
  • "Great value for money."
  • "Menu on offer is very good, with portion sizes, taste matching very good prices."
  • "Better value too."

Cons:

  • "Boring music too when it’s such a nice little spot that could be made all the more pleasant with spending a bit of money on quality and the ambience overall."
  • "£14 for a full English is expensive enough, but we had to pay extra for baked beans and a bit of cheese in our scrambled eggs!"
  • "A full English with beans and a sprinkling of cheese comes in at around £16!! Really!"
  • "Sadly won't be going back to Mrs S, not at those prices."
  • "Nice choice of tea and coffee lots of refills. However, very disappointed with the quality of crockery thought it would be China."
  • "Was a little frustrating when we booked to come and we were told no prams to sit down with a 3 and a half year old and a 5 month old to see people walk past with prams."
  • "I wouldn’t recommend this place as there are much nicer places to eat in Maldon."
