Historical Ships and Exhibits

Pros:

  • "Being able to explore war ships from different periods of history is wonderful."
  • "The Mary Rose exhibition is so much better than 20 years ago, an enormous amount to see and learn."
  • "The HMS Victory tour was incredible and even though it was busy it never felt like it."
  • "Visiting beautifully restored and preserved historical ships is a great thing to do if you love naval history."
  • "The stars of the exhibition are the HMS Victory (currently under restoration so half of it isn't visible from the outside) and the Mary Rose."
  • "HMS Warrior a real gem and beautiful with Xmas lights."
  • "HMS Warrior was incredible, HMS Victory was amazing (get the audio tour) but the Mary Rose was something else."
  • "HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, and HMS Warrior alone are worth the price."

Cons:

  • "It's a shame Victory is currently undergoing restoration work as you can't see her in all her glory."
  • "Victory under restoration so there are no masts on her, so a bit of a disappointment to the eye."
  • "The only let down was HMS Victory was being restored and we couldn't see it in all its glory."
  • "It's a bit expensive but we got the audio tour which was fantastic."
  • "Mary Rose exhibition is quite incredible. Took a while for my eyes to adjust to the darkness."
  • "The only downside to our visit was the cafe just outside The Mary Rose exhibit. A single Doughnut was £3.10 and very dried out."
  • "The Victory is currently undergoing a big restoration project and is shrouded in scaffolding."
  • "Only went to see the Mary Rose museum which was excellently presented and accessible for wheelchairs."

Ticket Pricing and Value

Pros:

  • "A fascinating place needing more than one day so the annual pass is worth it."
  • "You will struggle to fit it all in on one day - so the all year ticket is great value if you are local."
  • "The ticket being annual, we are definitely returning."
  • "The price may feel a bit expensive, but over the past 8 months of my current Ultimate Explorer Ticket, I've used it enough for each exhibit to be about £3 each!"
  • "I recommend the ultimate explorer ticket as it’s valid for a year and you can come back again and again."
  • "Your best bet for tickets is to get the ultimate explorer pass online as you don't have to pay anything extra for the main attractions and the pass is valid for as many visits as you want for 12 months."
  • "Great value tickets, including an annual pass (annual family ticket £120)."
  • "Highly recommend buying an ultimate experience ticket, this gives a fantastic opportunity to visit everything on site and is valid for 12 months."

Cons:

  • "My only concern was the ticket price. I work with many very disadvantaged children and to be on Free School Meals the income is very low and would exclude any family visit."
  • "A bit expensive if you you are family visiting."
  • "The tickets aren't cheap but the fact they are valid for a year makes them a bargain."
  • "The ticket price of 24 GBP might repel the average tourist, this place abounds in history and heritage."
  • "Worth a visit but prices are very steep. We only went to see the Mary Rose which was great but cost £97 for my husband, my 5 year old and I, plus a souvenir book."
  • "Very expensive but so much to see. The guided recording handset was fantastic to hear all about the history of HMS Victory."
  • "Sadly I have to rate one star. Not because we had a bad day, we certainly did not, but the value for money (in our specific case) is absolutely appalling."
  • "For lovers of naval history this cannot be beaten, quite possibly it's the best site of this nature in the world. The ships are fantastic and the Mary Rose breathtaking BUT, it's an eye watering entry fee."

Staff and Guides

Pros:

  • "Staff excellent and some 'in character'."
  • "The staff are excellent, friendly, very knowledgeable, and very helpful when it comes to disability access!"
  • "Staff super helpful which adds to experience."
  • "There are guides soon dressed in uniform or period costume throughout the museum and they were friendly and helpful."
  • "One last big praise for the staff who are brilliant, knowledgeable and happy in their work. They are a fountain of knowledge and are keen to explain everything about the Ship."
  • "The staff in the Mary Rose are excellent and helpful with small children."
  • "The guides dressed in period costumes were funny and very informative, not sure if that was just as it was half term."
  • "The staff were really friendly and informative. I emailed a couple of times for information and received a quick response both times."

Cons:

  • "Loved the history but the ticket booth operator could have been more helpful with directions when we stated we wanted to see a specific thing."
  • "We did not finish all areas since we started in the afternoon, we will be back since we got the year long tickets."
  • "We had an ultimate explorer ticket so had entry to all the exhibits. The boat ride was fantastic, great commentary along the way."
  • "A bit of a pain having to show your ticket at every exhibit."

Food and Amenities

Pros:

  • "Food was a bit pricey but that's the same anywhere you go these days."
  • "The resturant had a good verity of food and although a bit pricy, was very good quality."
  • "Food is a little pricey too, but nice."
  • "The only comment I have was lack of sufficient choices for a teenager, leaving only a bowl of chips on this occasion. Ice cream for pudding was outside from the van."
  • "We had a great time. Though we did not finish all areas since we started in the afternoon, we will be back since we got the year long tickets."
  • "The kids area was being renovated when we attended but we look forward to our return to explore more."
  • "Very helpful, nice and knowledgeable staff. You definitely can't visit everything in one day."

Cons:

  • "As with most places these days though the cafe was VERY expensive with only 2 of us costing just shy of £20 for two drinks, 2 muffins and 1 sandwich."
  • "We took our own picnic as the price of food had shocked us on our previous visit."
  • "A good trip out but overpriced."
  • "Cafe stopped serving food way too early (3pm) but it was a quiet weekday."
  • "The sausage rolls are good and probably worth the money but the drinks are pushing it a bit."
  • "I’m sure I’ll come back to see everything I missed…"
  • "The harbour cruise (included in the ticket) is a must and takes an hour plus the queue."
  • "The Mary Rose will take an hour and so will the HMS Victory. The Museum will definetely complete your visit and then you must take the ferry to Gosport to visit the submarines and the “Explosions” exhibit."
