Staff and Service

Pros:

  • "Though to the staff who were polite thank you for your professionalism, loved what you did, loved the show too!"
  • "Plenty of staff on, pointing out the idiosyncrasies of the flooring."
  • "Attentive and friendly staff ushered guests into seats swiftly."
  • "Staff were all smiling and helpful great night."

  • "Fabulous staff so helpful friendly and funny."
  • "The staff were so helpful and kind I really can't thank them enough for ensuring we had a wonderful afternoon at their theatre."

Cons:

  • "Asked three times if could have air flow but to no avail. All staff friendly but nothing they could do."
  • "The show was great but the attitude if people selling half time glow sticks was disgusting when their card machine was misbehaving."
  • "Unfortunately some of the staff were rude & had to be informed multiple times that my group had tickets."
  • "The staff initially were friendly & helpful & helped everyone to get to the right seats. The show was quite disappointing although the children enjoyed it. My daughter's chair collapsed in the interval, the screws had come out & the seat came away completely."
  • "Sent email to the box office and had no reply."
  • "Seats are narrow and uncomfortable and even though I've emailed twice since our boxing day visit to raise issues we've not had a reply."

Seating and Comfort

Pros:

  • "Lovely styled theatre, very quaint and intimate."
  • "We were sat upstairs in the circle we had a brilliant view of the stage."
  • "Seating was comfy and view from upper circle was just fine."
  • "The seating spaces are generous for a theatre of that era."
  • "The view is not blocked anywhere by pillars."
  • "Lovely little theatre with drinks, sweets, crisps and ice cream to buy."
  • "The seating wasn't cramped like we were expecting."

Cons:

  • "Seats are quite small. We were at a live music gig and there is a 'no dance' policy which was very disappointing."
  • "The only downside was no leg room in the theatre, the seats were very cramped."
  • "Seats are narrow and uncomfortable and even though I've emailed twice since our boxing day visit to raise issues we've not had a reply."
  • "The seating rows are so close to each other that anyone of reasonable height will be cramped."
  • "Seats are a little snug and you are packed in a little tight."
  • "However if you're tall, you wouldn't fit in the seats. Anyone 6ft and over were struggling to get their legs to fit comfortably."
  • "Seats are incredibly small and cramped, presumably so they can fit as many people in as possible."

Facilities and Accessibility

Pros:

  • "Since I was last at the Theatre Royal, the upstairs bar has moved sides, Chris Moreno’s (former manager) office is now a lounge area and there is the addition of The Prosecco Bar and cafe on the ground floor."
  • "Fantastic theatre and places like this around our country need local support or they will disappear. Great venue, Great staff and a lovely place. Will keep going."
  • "Great traditional theatre."
  • "It is a delightful small traditional theatre with added aircon, which during this heat wave was absolutely welcomed."
  • "Gorgeous old theatre with amazing shows. Highly recommended for all ages, with good access for all and plenty of facilities including new cafe and spots for refreshments."
  • "For disabled, if you let them know at the front door, they let you in the side door when there are no steps."
  • "The Theatre is an asset to the City. A historic venue. It has recently been lovingly & sympathetically refitted."

Cons:

  • "I am a disabled person and was told there was no lift. There were 3 lots of stairs."
  • "Interesting venue but the bar areas are way too small for the amount of customers and the seats are really packed in tightly."
  • "First time visit lovely building pantomime was good down side seats could be more comfortable and if you were disabled would struggle with steps to the top floors."
  • "The boxes have four seats but in truth, really seat two comfortably."
  • "The men's toilets were lacking which is unusual and had an entry that allowed the direct side on view of the urinals which is very odd and uncomfortable."
  • "But all those stairs to go up and the steps in the theatre are awkward."
  • "Only 2 ladies toilets so quite a queue during intermission."

Cons:

  • "The show was great but the attitude if people selling half time glow sticks was disgusting when their card machine was misbehaving."
  • "Saw Gyles Brandreth last night. Ruined by oppressive heat."
  • "Backside fast asleep after an hour, the old seats are really the only let down."
  • "The temperature when the show was happening was close to unbearable. More aircon needed!"
  • "The only thing that I would say is the theatre is not very clean and could do with a good clean as you could see loads of dust and it smells fusty."
