Atmosphere & Decor
Pros:
"Great pub, full of history, and Ghosts 👻"
"inside the place was really cool!"
"The Golden Fleece is located in the heart of York and is walking distance to everything a person visiting might want to see."
"A traditional English pub in a 1500s building."
"The building itself is very narrow, and full of character."
"Lovely atmospheric pub! Went above and beyond to help create a wonderful experience for my daughter’s birthday!"
"Claims to be the most haunted bar in York, and is a bit campy in playing up the skeleton theme, but it is a fun place to grab a bite and a drink, in a genuinely Tudor era building."
Cons:
"The pub was dirty and sticky at the bar and glasses not clean!"
"Service wasn't bad, pub was a little grubby."
"Bit of a grubby pub and food not great. Seems a bit hyped up for what it is."
"Unfortunately I think the place relies so much on its history and quirkiness that it doesn’t need to try which is so sad."
"Popped into yorks most haunted pub for a drink. Disappointed isn't the word. Shabby inside ... the entrance has plaster coming away."
"The decor really needs looking at."
"The place is generally not very clean. Tables and menu are quite sticky."
Staff & Service
Pros:
"The golden fleece was a great place to stay, rooms were spacious and comfortable and the food was gorgeous. Also the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful."
"Staff are really nice, polite and friendly."
"The staff are all so friendly and having live music every night is such a nice change rather than just a dull quiet place."
"Staff checked everything was ok and the deserts are just perfect way to end meal."
"All the staff were very friendly, helpful welcoming and we had two excellent evenings in there Friday/Saturday night."
"The young lady behind the bar was very cool, told the history of the place, about the ghosts and what not, always smiling and helpful."
"The staff were lovely, the food tasty and the rooms were in keeping with the ghostly stories."
Cons:
"Bar person very rudely said 'He's been sacked'."
"Also with 7 people at our table 2 of our meals were brought out after everyone else had finished, with not even an apology."
"Terrible communication from the staff when we placed a food order from the app."
"I watched other tables receive meals one at a time and left people waiting again no explanations or apologies."
"Rude staff who don't know the fairly limited menu or which drinks they serve."
"Very unfriendly female younger staff both of them last night, like grumpy teenagers."
"The staff had a real lack of care for the fact that our food hadn’t arrived and there was no apology!"
Food & Drink
Pros:
"Food was great which also catered for my veggie daughter."
"Breakfast the next morning was immense and tasted fantastic."
"Food was great with large portions. Our table enjoyed the steak pie, tuna fish cakes, daily soup, southern fried chicken - we all left happy and satisfied."
"Good selection of beers. Small venue but had live bands playing in back room."
"Amazing prices in regards to alcoholic cocktails."
"The food was delicious, just what I needed."
"The Hunters Chicken was hands down the best I've ever had."
Cons:
"We got a 'sharing' bowl of chips and it was just a sad, small bowl of frozen chips enough for one person."
"Charging 12£ for the burger that should at most for the abysmal quality cost 8£."
"Devastated to leave a negative review, we've been coming here for years for the food but yesterday will be the last."
"Old pub with a bit of history, however unfortunately the food is terrible. Worst meal I have ever paid for."
"Food was not very good. The pie was basically just crust with not much filling."
"Possibly the worst food I’ve ever been served in a pub."
"Our mains where quite frankly some of the poorest I've had over our time in York."
Rooms & Cleanliness
Pros:
"The bathroom was amazing with a large walk in shower and freestanding bath."
"The rooms are really comfortable and quiet."
"We stayed in the St Catherines room; was lovely and cosy!"
"I’ve been in the pub a few times but this time stayed 2 nights in the Minster suite, fabulous room and staff no ghosts though."
"The room was amazing and clean and with all its history of ghosts etc and the age of the building certainly played it’s part on our experience and what we encountered whilst being in there."
"We stayed In Mrs. peckets room, floors sloping which were strange to walk on, the room and bedding spotlessly clean coffee and tea making facilities in the room."
"Myself and my wife stayed in the utterly massive shambles suite, the room was clean, bathroom was fantastic and the bed was very comfy."
Cons:
"For £140.00 a night it's not good! I hate having to write this review but 140.00 is a lot of money for a dirty room I wouldn't recommend staying here but for drinks and great atmosphere and live music it's great!"
"Some plaster needs a touch up and the shower could use with some black mould remover."
"The bathroom (i believe had been discovered in 2000) had a random puddle of water in the middle of the floor every time we entered in there."
"Shower room floor was filthy and couldn't open window as the ledge outside was full of pigeon poo."
"The room it's self was filthy cobwebs everywhere. Hadn't been cleaned properly."
"However the room we stayed in was dirty the carpet looked like it hadn't been hoovered in weeks the shower had mold growing in it the shower doors didn't have handles because they had broken and weren't attached to the runners also the room had cobwebs in it and the sofa in the room was really worn and broken piece of wood sticking out of it which we sat on."
"When it arrived the food was very small (only 8 chips), and the fish so over cooked it was literally inedible!"
